Headteacher’s message to parents/carers
This year, we are asking all Tunbury children to take extra pride in their own learning, with the focus on the quality, presentation and progress of their work. To help with this, we have invested in some super smart new exercise books for children in Years 1-6, featuring the Tunbury school logo and school values, as well as clear expectations for what children’s written work should look like. Earlier this week, I had the pleasure of visiting classrooms to award Team Points for wonderful work. Although we have only been back at school for a short time, we already have some fantastic learning which children were rightly very proud of. Well done everyone!
Why not ask your child what they are proud of this week?
Have a lovely weekend everyone.
Sharing learning information from school to home: Reception staff have been holding individual parent consultations for parents/carers this week during our afternoon sessions, which have been lovely – the first steps in building a learning partnership for our brand new parents.
For parents/carers in Years 1-6, thank you for joining us at our Meet the Team meetings this week. If you were unable to attend, we have uploaded the presentations from these meetings to the class pages on the school website. Here, you’ll also find this term’s Topic Information newsletters, which show you what your child will be learning this term in each subject area, as well as information on Brain Builder tasks and home learning. This year, home learning will be given through Tapestry in Years R-1 and through a homework book in Years 2-6. This approach is based on the consensus from our recent Parent survey and Staff survey, in which both groups agreed a preference for home learning to be set via a homework book, rather than solely by Teams.
The Meet the Team presentations and Topic Information newsletters are at:
In our Parent survey, we heard that you would like more information about your child’s learning at school, so please use this information as your starting points for the new academic year.
TSA Annual General Meeting: The TSA AGM will be taking place on Thursday 23rd September from 8:30pm in the school hall. Refreshments will be provided and anyone is welcome!
We also have a vacancy for a treasurer. If you are interested or would like more details, please email firstname.lastname@example.org
Swimming: Lessons will start next week for Ruby, Magenta and Emerald classes. Letters and Consent forms have been given to the children to bring home. Please complete and return the reply slip on the letter and consent form to school today.
Forest School: Forest school sessions will also start next week, with our Year 3 classes enjoying this opportunity in Term 1. Children will need to come into school on their Forest School day wearing their Forest School clothes, not their school uniform.
Azure class – Monday
Amber class – Wednesday
Sapphire class - Friday
PE: We had had our first PE lessons this week under our new approach to the PE curriculum. As you’ll already know, we have transferred responsibility for teaching PE lessons from our Sports Coaches to our class teachers. Previously, Sports Coaches led PE for half a day a week to cover for teachers’ PPA time. Now, PPA time is covered by our HLTA team and teachers teach PE lessons themselves, with two separate sessions timetabled through the week. We still have our Sports Coaches, Mr Kent and Miss Loxton, in school, but their role is now to support teaching and learning.
Children are now changing for PE in school, so they do need to have their PE kit in school all week. We now have a much greater flexibility in teaching PE, so PE days may change due to weather conditions, or needing to swap one week with another year group if a class is unable to do PE in their given slot. Please see below information regarding your child’s PE days.
*These are subject to change termly.
Year 1 – Tuesday and Wednesday
Year 2 – Thursday and Friday
Year 3 – Tuesday and Thursday
Year 4 – Thursday and Friday
Year 5 – Monday and Wednesday
Year 6 – Tuesday and Thursday
Also, please be aware that if your child’s class has Forest School or swimming lessons, they will only be doing one ‘regular’ PE lesson per week.
Exit procedures from Monday: From Monday, Reception children will now be staying in school all day and will be going home at 3.10. We have made a change to enable Reception parents/carers to continue to collect from their classroom doors, rather than on the playground. This should enable a smoother experience for Reception children, parents/carers and staff.
This also frees up some space on the top playground, enabling us to make a slight change to the position of our dismissal lines for Years 3-6 classes at home time. We will use the class cones again next week to show you where your children’s class will stand.
Messages via the school office: The school office staff are receiving a lot of last minute phone calls about changes to adults picking up children at home time. We are happy to accommodate these as a one-off emergency, but ideally prefer you to sort out going home arrangements with your child, in the morning, prior to the start of school. However, if you do need to get a message to the class teacher, please email the office at email@example.com so that we can help.
Snacks and packed lunch reminders: Please remember that any snacks eaten at breaktime must be a healthy snack, ie fruit or vegetables. Also, please remember that Tunbury is a nut-free school. This means that you cannot give children any products containing nuts (eg Nutella) in packed lunches. This rule is not new, but we do need everyone to understand that the consequences of sending nut products into school can be potentially life-threatening for Tunbury children with severe allergies. Thank you for your support and understanding.
Responsible parking: Although it is busy outside school, we do need to remind you to drive and park responsibly, as we have already seen a few examples of issues caused by inconsiderate parking by parents and carers. Thank you.
Site Manager vacancy: This is a fantastic job for the right person, so if you know anyone who might be suitable for this role, then please pass on this advert:
Lost Item: We have a small silver child’s bag with a tiny treasures logo in the office which, was found outside the school gate. The bag contains a pencil case and some paper. If it is yours, please contact the school office.
Team Points: Here are the Team Points totals at the end of this week – children have made such a fabulous start to the year, our Team Point totals are already very high! Attenborough are in the lead – well done!
Covid-19: It is essential that we all remain vigilant for Covid symptoms. As before, if you or your children are experiencing Covid symptoms, do not approach or enter the school site. Continue to follow the current Covid guidance – you can check this at www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/
