Headteacher’s message to parents/carers

Dear Parents/Carers,

This week, our Year 6 children have been enjoying their residential trip to PGL Marchants Hill.  Children have taken part in a wide range of activities, such as raft-building, climbing, abseiling, giant swing and buggy building.  Mrs Stallard reported that the highlight for many was the raft-building; lots of fun was had trying to manoeuvre the hand-made rafts around the lake (and quite a lot of fun for some in the lake too - they’re definitely braver than the adults!). For many children, this will have been their first experience of staying away from home or taking part in such adventurous activities.  We are so proud of them for their brilliant teamwork, overcoming their fears and pushing themselves further than they might have thought possible.  Fabulous work, Year 6!  I would also like to express our thanks to the staff members who gave their time and energy to supporting children on this trip:  Mrs Stallard, Miss Elliott, Mrs Seymour, Mr Mills, Mrs Cole, Mr Kent and Miss Baker.

Today, we marked Armistice Day – we paused for reflection and silence at 11am this morning on the 11th day of the 11th month, to give thanks for the service and sacrifice of others.  Thank you to our School Councillors for organising and selling our poppies this week, as well as making arrangements for next week’s Children in Need appeal.  For Children in Need, we’ll be dressing SPOTacularly next Friday and raising funds for children less fortunate or with greater challenges than those we experience ourselves.

In all of these respects, it is important for our children to look beyond their classroom or school into the wider world.  Education professionals would call this citizenship, personal development, or SMSC education (spiritual, moral, social and cultural education), but of course it’s simply about children growing to be the young people and adults we would wish them to become.  At Tunbury we are ambitious for our children’s futures – we want our children to become successful, independent, confident and wonderful adults – and we are committed to providing them with the opportunities to grow and develop whilst in our care.

Have a lovely weekend everyone.  The weather is looking good (sunny and light winds – perfect!) so we look forward to seeing you at our rearranged TSA Fireworks on Sunday.

Best wishes

Ruth Austin

Our Learning: Year 1

Tell Me a Story – Do all stories have a happy ending?

This week in Year 1, we have been learning about Goldilocks and the Three Bears. We have retold the story through role play and we have also used a range of adjectives to describe Goldilocks and the setting of the story.

In maths, we have been writing addition number sentences using a part whole model. We have been able to write 4 number sentences for each part whole model and we know that is called a ‘fact family’.

In our topic work, we have been learning about plants and different types of trees. We have been on a tree hunt to identify evergreen and deciduous trees around our school. We have been keeping an eye on our cress heads and are enjoying watching them grow!

Admissions for children starting school in September 2023 are now open: Applications for a primary school place should be made via your ‘home’ local authority.

At Tunbury, we held our first New Entrants meeting last week and have four more meetings planned:

  • Monday 14thNovember 9.15-10.15
  • Wednesday 23rdNovember 3.30-4.30
  • Thursday 1stDecember 1.45-2.45

We also offer an online meeting, with presentation and Q& We have also been learning about Remembrance Day and why we wear poppies to remember those who lost their lives. We have enjoyed learning about primary and secondary colours and using these colours to paint a colour wheel.

A session only, for parents/carers who cannot visit us in person.  The online meeting is on Monday 14th November at 5.00-5.45.

To book a place on any of our New Entrants meetings, please email office@tunbury.kent.sch.uk with your name, your child’s name, a contact number and the date of the session you wish to attend.

Children in Need: Our School Council are proud and excited to be getting us all joining in with many others around the UK to participate in this year’s Children in Need fundraising programme. Run by the BBC, their mission is to help ensure every child in the UK is safe, happy, secure, and has the opportunities they need to reach their potential.

Over the course of the week (14th – 18th November), children will be taking part in activities based on wellbeing, keeping active and staying mentally healthy. This will coincide with our Anti-Bullying Week where the theme is “Reach Out”, and we hope that this theme will remind everyone whether it’s in school, at home, in the community or online, to reach out and support others where needed.

You can help us make a memorable week, and raise as much money as possible for Children in Need by supporting the following fundraising activities taking place in our school:

  • Odd Socks Day – Monday 14th November - All you need to do is wear odd socks! A great way to celebrate what makes us all unique in Anti-Bullying Week!
  • Feel SPOTacular – Friday 18th November - All children are invited to take part by wearing something spotty. For this, we are asking for a donation of £2. Like last year, a link will be sent out to allow online donations as we are unable to take cash in school. You could go all out by wearing a SPOTacular three-piece suit, go for a more subtle approach by wearing some SPOTacular socks or even dress up in the full Pudsey gear. Your £2 donation will also include one automatic entry for your child to enter the ‘Design your own Pudsey Competition’ with the deadline for this being Thursday 17th.

We hope that you take the opportunity to join in with the fundraising this year, as together, we can make a big difference to the lives of children across the UK.

Data Collection Sheets: This document has been handed out via class teachers at parent consultations (printed on green coloured paper).  It is vital that we have correct phone numbers and e-mail addresses if we are to communicate with you effectively.  When you are satisfied that the information on the Data Collection sheet is correct, please sign and date the form and return to your child’s class teacher or to the school office. Please sign and return the form even if there are no alterations to be made. Please return by Friday 18th November 2022.  Thank you for your help with this matter.

After school clubs: Reminder – Our after school clubs will resume on week starting Monday 14th November 2022.

Individual/Sibling group Photos: On Tuesday 22nd/Wednesday 23rd November Tempest photographers will be visiting school to take individual/sibling group photos (in-school children).  All children will have an individual photo taken, unless you tell us otherwise.  Tempest will also be able to take photos of sibling groups of in-school children. However, if you do not require a sibling group photo, please send an email to the school office.

Team Points: Here are the Team Points totals at the end of this week.  Hawking team are in the lead – well done!

Road Crossing Patrol: As detailed in our previous Weekly Bulletins, we are writing to remind you of the vacancy for a School Crossing Patrol (SCP) to work on Tunbury Avenue.  We really hope to fill this position soon, to help keep our families safe on their journeys to and from school.
