Headteacher’s message to parents/carers

Dear Parents/Carers,

This week, we welcomed Reverend Roe from Walderslade Baptist Church to lead our Harvest assemblies for KS1 and KS2.   Together, we thought about the things that we should all be thankful for, such as that we have a safe home to live in and we have enough to eat every day.  Reflecting on our Harvest donations, Reverend Roe asked children to think about choosing to give something which is important to them.  So for example, if children really like chocolate they might donate a favourite chocolate bar, or if they like pasta they might donate a bag of pasta.  In doing so, children will be showing the act of thankfulness and generosity, as well as the thought of thankfulness and generosity.

Since then, our collection of Harvest donations has been growing, with plenty of items that children really like (eg pasta, breadsticks and Haribo!) so thank you for your support.  Our donations will be collected by Medway Foodbank next week and the last day for children to bring items in is Tuesday 15th October.

Also this week, I visited all three Year 1 classes and saw some fabulous learning, with children particularly enjoying their English and PE lessons.  In English, children have been reading traditional tales including Little Red Riding Hood, helping them to answer their key question, ‘What makes a good story?’   In PE, children are creating a wonderful dance to a classic song (‘I just can’t wait to be King’ from the Lion King) which is full of fun and movement.  It’s great to see our children thriving!  Thank you to all of the Year 1 staff for making this possible.

Have a lovely weekend everyone.

Best wishes

Ruth Austin

Pupil Leadership update:  This week we have been busy holding interviews for our Subject Ambassadors for this academic year.  Well done to the following children who have been appointed to the following roles:

Cleaner needed for Team Tunbury: We are looking for a new Cleaner for our wonderful school.  Please see the advert published on Kent Teach: www.kent-teach.com/Recruitment/Vacancy/

Clubs: Tag Rugby, Coding Club, Young Voices Singing Club, and Dance Club are cancelled next Thursday 17th October, so that staff can support the TSA Disco. However, to support parents of children who usually attend a club on Thursday, Miss Payne and Mr McEvoy will be running two one-off clubs. Miss Payne will run an active/sports club outside, and Mr McEvoy will run a calm indoor computing club in the IT Suite. If your child’s usual club is cancelled and you would like them to join either Miss Payne’s Sports Club or Mr McEvoy’s Computer Club on this occasion – please email office@tunbury.kent.sch.uk. Year 4, 5 and 6 children attending these clubs can stay at school between 4.15 and 4.30 if they are attending the disco.

This is a reminder that during the week of the 21st of October, only Mr Whybrow’s Football Club (Monday) will be running due to parents' evenings.

Parent Governor Election: Just a reminder that our Parent Governor ballot is now open.  It closes at 3.30 pm on Wednesday 16th October. 2024. To access the ballot, please refer to the email sent out on Wednesday 2nd October to parent/carers.  If you did not receive it, please contact the school office at office@tunbury.kent.sch.uk so that we can send you the details.

Attendance: In addition to the information we gave last week regarding Working Together to Improve Attendance and our updated attendance policy, we wanted to highlight a change to how we refer for penalty notices. Penalty Notice Fines will be issued for Term-Time leave of five or more consecutive days. Inset training days are school days and can be included in the five or more consecutive days, where there was intent to be absent for term-time leave. At Tunbury, this will be applied from January 1st 2025.

New Entrants Dates: Do you have a child starting school in September 2025?  Please come and visit us in November or December to find out more about joining Team Tunbury!

Playground gate: In the mornings, please be mindful of others when approaching or standing at the playground gate as children are coming into school.  The gate is a narrow space, so please say your goodbyes away from the gate, so that children can walk straight in when they get there, and please avoid standing at the gate to watch them, as this causes a blockage for others.  If you are walking to school with your dog, please keep your dog away from the gate area as this sometimes causes concern. Thank you for your support.

Flu Immunisation: Tuesday 26th November 2024 for Years R, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. Please see the letter which was emailed to parents and has been published in the Parents – Letters and Forms section of our website. Please note the e-consent portal closes on 20/11/24, 6 daysbefore our school’s immunisation session, and NHS cannot accept late consents or consents on the day of vaccination.

If any parents/carers are having issues completing the online consent form, please call the immunisation team using one of the methods below:

Weekly Class Attendance: This is a weekly feature on our bulletin to highlight and celebrate good levels of attendance. For the second week in a row, Lavender Class are our KS1 winners. Crimson Class take the top spot for KS2 with 100% attendance this week. Fantastic effort, well done both classes!

Team Points: Here are the current totals. It’s very close… but Hawking are in the lead!
