Headteacher’s message to parents/carers
Dear Parents/Carers,
Today, everyone in Team Tunbury is enjoying Christmas Jumper day and Christmas lunch day. Children (and staff) look very festive indeed and we’re all set for a busy Christmas lunchtime. Lots of crackers and plenty of gravy – thank you to our fabulous kitchen colleagues for looking after us so well, as always. For Christmas Jumper day, if you would like to make a donation to Save the Children, you can do so at our Tunbury page: Christmas Jumper Day 2026 As I write this message (10.30 on Friday morning) we’ve already raised £246. Thank you for your support.
The absolute highlight of a very busy week has been Reception Christmas performance yesterday afternoon, which was wonderful. Always a pleasure to see our youngest children take part in such a magical occasion – we had everything you could wish for, including stars, angels, camels, sheep, shepherds, wise men and of course Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus. Children did a brilliant job in learning so many different songs, thanks to lots of practice and hard work from their teachers and teaching assistants. Thank you to Mrs Escobar and everyone in the Reception team for making this possible.
Also this week, each class has completed this year’s Tunbury Christmas craft challenge, which was to create a personalised 3D Christmas tree for the Tunbury Art Gallery. These look absolutely brilliant and we’ll share the photos on our facebook page so that you can see too.
Last week of term next week, with lots and lots to look forward to - have a lovely weekend everyone.
Best wishes

Governor message on Disability Awareness Month
Disability Awareness Month: Not All Disabilities Are Visible
From 20th November to 20th December, we recognise Disability Awareness Month—a time to amplify the voices, experiences, and strengths of people living with disabilities. As a Black woman with hidden disabilities, I choose to speak openly, not because I am seeking sympathy, but because visibility and understanding matter.
I live with fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis, and an underactive thyroid, among other conditions. These illnesses deeply affect my mobility, my energy, and my daily routines. I experience extreme fatigue, widespread pain, and limitations that are not immediately obvious to the outside world. When you look at me, you might not see what I carry. But that’s exactly why awareness is so important.
Not All Disabilities Can Be Seen
There is a harmful misconception that disability must be visible to be valid. This misunderstanding leads to judgement, stigma, and sometimes even harassment. It happens in car parks, when someone with a Blue Badge is questioned because they “don’t look disabled.” It happens in public spaces, when people with hidden conditions are stared at or confronted for using disabled toilets.
This behaviour is not only wrong—it’s damaging. Hidden disabilities are real. They affect millions of people. And none of us should have to prove or explain our pain to be treated with basic dignity.
There Is No Shame in Disability
I am not ashamed of who I am. My disabilities do not diminish me; they are part of my story, but not the whole of it. I choose to embrace my abilities—my resilience, my determination, my courage. Those are the qualities that shape me.
There is no shame in having a disability, whether visible or invisible. Shame comes from a society that fails to understand or accommodate us—not from our conditions. And this is exactly why we must speak up, stand together, and support one another.
Becoming a Disability Champion
Awareness is the first step, but action must follow. Being a disability champion means:
- Challenging assumptions about what disability “looks like.”
- Supporting friends, colleagues, and community members with disabilities.
- Offering kindness instead of judgement.
- Celebrating abilities, not focusing on limitations.
- Advocating for accessibility, equity, and compassion.
Disability is part of human diversity. It deserves the same respect and representation as any other aspect of identity.
As we observe Disability Awareness Month, let’s commit to creating a world where everyone—visible disability or hidden disability—feels seen, supported, and empowered. Let’s shift the narrative from shame to strength, from stigma to solidarity.
Because our disabilities do not define our worth—but how we support one another.

Severe weather planning: Thinking ahead to winter, we always try to remain open in periods of snow or severe weather, if it is safe to do so. Just a reminder that parents/carers would be informed via email of any school closure, so please ensure that we do have your correct email addresses. As well as this, we use the Kent Closures website (www.kentclosures.co.uk), where you can also register to receive free email alerts. Emails/alerts are sent as soon as possible after a decision has been made, although exact timings cannot be guaranteed as this depends on site conditions and the completion of an early morning risk assessment by the Headteacher and Site Manager. This information is also published on our website: www.tunbury.kent.sch.uk/Parents/Severe-Weather/
Free School Meals and Pupil Premium: Currently, the local authority is providing Household Support Funding for families with children eligible for free school meals. For the Christmas holiday break families with children eligible for free school meals will receive a £60 voucher per child.
Could you apply for free school meals for your child? Did you know that the school receives extra funding called pupil premium for all children eligible for free school meals? We use pupil premium funding to improve the overall quality of education that we can offer in school, as well as providing additional resources and support. A benefit of Pupil Premium funding is that this can be used to pay for the cost of your child’s school trips, so you won’t be asked for parental contributions for these events.
To check if you are eligible for Free School Meals, please visit www.kent.gov.uk/education-and-children/schools/free-school-meals#tab-1. To apply, please visit www.cloudforedu.org.uk/ofsm/kent/.
