Weekly Bulletin: Friday 12th November 2021
Headteacher’s message to parents/carers
Thanks to our fabulous TSA, the return of our annual fireworks spectacular last Sunday was indeed spectacular! With a new record attendance of around 1,800 visitors, it was wonderful to be able to enjoy such a successful community event. An amazing total of £4000 was raised from this event. On behalf of everyone at Tunbury, I would like to express our gratitude for the many hours of hard work by our TSA which made such a large event possible. Team Tunbury in action!
This week, it has been brilliant to be able to re-start our extra-curricular clubs for the first time since March 2020. Children had some wonderful opportunities, with Spanish, coding, singing, football, mindfulness colouring, board games and Science clubs on offer. This felt like another step back to ‘normal’ school life, which is so welcome. Also, while writing about the highlights of this week, I would like to highlight how much children are enjoying their PE lessons. As you’ll know, we have transferred responsibility for teaching PE from our Sports Coaches to our class teachers, who are all doing a fabulous job. At the same time, we’ve introduced new curriculum areas into PE and I have to that say that the Year 4 frisbee lessons this week looked like a lot of fun for everyone!
Today, we’re looking forward to welcoming our Year 6 children back from this week’s residential trip. Children have had a fantastic time with all kinds of adventurous activities and experiences, but they will certainly be a little bit tired! A huge thank you to our staff team for giving their time and dedication to this trip: thank you to Mrs Ward, Mrs Stallard, Mr Mills, Miss Sibborn, Mrs Smith, Mr Kent and Mrs Cole. Enjoy a restful weekend everyone.
Next week, it’s anti-bullying week, where will be supporting all of our children in this important issue. Through preventing bullying and ensuring children know what to do if they (or a friend) are experiencing bullying, we want to make it clear to everyone that bullying is never tolerated within our school community. To help with this, we’ll be launching our new anti-bullying motto: Tunbury is united against bullying. We will share full information on anti-bullying week in next week’s bulletin, but for now we would like to remind you that Monday is Odd Socks day. We look forward to seeing some unique sock combinations! If you would like more information on anti-bullying week or odd sock day in advance of next week, please visit https://anti-bullyingalliance.org.uk/anti-bullying-week/odd-socks-day .
Have a lovely weekend.
Our Learning: Year 3
This term we have started our new topic, Heroes and Heroines. Our first heroine is Katherine Johnson; we are researching her work at NASA and have produced a double page spread about her life. In English we have produced a fact file on Mae Jemison, the first black American woman to go into space. The children have been really inspired by the stories of these very determined women.
In science, we are looking at forces and magnets and have carried out an investigation on the effects of friction on a moving object. The children worked in groups and were able to decide how to carry out their investigation.
In maths, we are consolidating our understanding of the column method for adding and subtracting then using our skills to answer reading and problem solving questions.
Last week was Outdoor Classroom Day and the children went outside to make some woodland animals from clay and the natural resources they could find in our woodland area. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed working outside, despite the cold weather.
All of our after-school extra-curricular clubs will be running next week. Please see details on our website:
Children from all clubs will be collected from the entrance to the main hall, outside the main office. Please come in via the pedestrian gate, please do not try to drive in to the school car park as it will be busy with children and families and this car park is for staff only. Thank you.
Team Points: Our first points total for the new term is as follows. Holmes are in the lead – well done!
School photos: Tempest photographers will be in school next week on Wednesday 17th and Thursday 18th November, for individual and sibling group photos of all children in school. Sorry - we are not able to facilitate pre-school sibling groups this year.
All children will have an individual photo taken, unless you tell us otherwise. Tempest will also be able to take photos of sibling groups of in-school children. However, if you do not require a sibling group photo, please send an email to the school office.
Children in Need: This year to raise money for Children in Need, the whole school will be taking part in the live Joe Wicks workout on the morning of Friday 19th November. Please ensure that all children have their PE kits in school on this day.
We have set up a Tunbury Children in Need Just Giving page, to try and raise our target of £500! Please make your donations here using this link: Tunbury Primary School is fundraising for BBC Children in Need (justgiving.com)
Covid-19: Please stay alert to possible Covid symptoms, get a test promptly if you or your child experience symptoms and follow all NHS guidance. School staff are taking twice weekly Covid tests and we would encourage other adults and secondary school pupils in our community to do the same. Please continue to follow the current Covid guidance – you can check this at www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/
