Headteacher’s Message

Dear Parents/Carers

What a week of wonderful Christmas performances! It has been a pleasure and privilege to celebrate Christmas with you this week, starting with our Reception children on Monday, Year 1’s ‘Gnome Alone’ on Tuesday and Year 2’s ‘The Inn Crowd’ on Wednesday. Throughout the week, children have risen to the occasion, singing and acting with confidence and enthusiasm. We are really proud of them, as I know you are too. Later on today, we look forward to welcoming parents for our KS2 ‘Carols on the Playground’, with refreshments from our TSA.

As you will remember from our September Parent Survey, the top two areas of development for Tunbury were to improve communication and the quality of information that we provide you with about your children’s learning. As a result of this, we have been making some changes and you will now be receiving ‘live’ assessment information for your child three times each year. Further information and a full guide to the new system will be provided, but to summarise very briefly….. all class teachers have completed their Autumn in-school assessments this week and after collating and checking, this information will be sent home with your child on Monday. This system and the accompanying information has been developed in consultation with parents from our recent Parent Forum, so we hope that you will find it useful. Regarding communication, parents also requested further notice on significant dates, so our ‘Dates for your Diary’ section below now extends to the end of the school year, with dates for Sports Day, Open Afternoons and Parent Forum meetings. All of these developments should be another step forward for us at Tunbury and we’ll be interested in your feedback on whether we’re going in the right direction!

Have a lovely weekend everyone.

Best wishes

Ruth Austin

Our learning Year 5

On Friday 6th December, a Viking, Brunhild, came to visit year 5.   The children learned some interesting facts about Viking life including how clothes were made using spinning and weaving as well as discovering how cloth was dyed using plants and urine - Yuk! Two children from Indigo class made a length of cord by twisting the thread.

The children found out what life was like for Viking children, it was certainly very different to their lives.  There were no schools; children learned how to make and use weapons; how to cook and how to forage for food and for moss.  The moss was very useful after a trip to the outside toilet!  Viking games were all designed to improve skills that would be useful in their adult life, Brunhild showed the children an example of a game the children would have played.  ‚ÄčThe most surprising fact is that children would have beer to drink instead of water! Brunhild brought in some utensils, a wooden bowl to eat from and some spoons made from animal horns.  Vikings were very resourceful, using all parts of an animal that they killed to eat. At the end of the afternoon, there was a Viking burial ceremony which involved dissecting animals and killing a servant - don't worry, not a drop of blood was shed. Year 5 certainly have developed their understanding of life under Viking rule.
