Headteacher’s message to parents/carers
Dear Parents/Carers,
This morning, we have started our transition process into the new academic year, with the first ‘Story Time’ visits with new class teachers meeting their new classes for the very first time. Having just walked around school to see the visits taking place, it’s lovely to see the beginnings of strong staff/pupil relationships in every classroom. We know that this is so important for primary-aged children, enabling successful learning and a happy school experience for everyone. As many parents/carers noted in our recent survey, children at Tunbury are fortunate to benefit from a skilled staff team who genuinely care for children and are committed to helping them achieve success. Your new class teachers are looking forward to getting to know your children over the next few weeks. From today’s session, why not ask your child about the book that their new teacher read to them this morning? Or what they are looking forward to next academic year?
As well as transition, there is still plenty of time this year for children to achieve their very best work in their current classes. Also, Summer Term has lots of extra excitement like Sports Day, which is fast approaching – it’s two weeks today on Friday 27th June, and we’re looking forward to it! Arrangements are similar to previous years, with KS2 Sports Day in the morning, followed by Family Picnic, then FS/KS1 Sports Day in the afternoon. Full information is in the section below, so please do take a look at the timings and the arrangements for the Family Picnic. We hope that you can join us.
Have a lovely weekend everyone.
Best wishes
Ruth Austin

Sports Day guidance:
- Children come to school for Sports Day already wearing their PE kits.
- At Sports Day, you are welcome to take photos/videos of your own children, but please remember that these are for you only and not to be shared online or on social media, as we do not have permission for any wider sharing.
- We look forward to seeing you cheer your child on, but please wait until the family picnic for a hug or drink.
- There will be two portaloos for visitors (not for Tunbury children) on the lower car park.
- During the Family Picnic, we ask children to remain around the edges of the field and not play with or move the Sports Day equipment which is left out ready for the afternoon events.
- At lunchtime, our Play Team staff will be on duty and 2 OPAL zones will be open: sandpit and digging zone. if the blue cover is on the sandpit, it is closed. Please do not allow younger children to enter the sandpit or move/damage the cover while it is closed. If the OPAL zones reach capacity, staff members will limit numbers or ask children to wait for their turn. Young visitors (eg preschool children) are welcome to join in but please supervise/support them in their play.
- At the end of the day, please take all your belongings and rubbish/recycling home with you. Thank you.
Steam Week
This was a fantastic start to the term with our annual STEAM week. Children across the school loved participating and developing STEAM skills, such as asking questions and solving problems through creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking. Here are a few pictures from KS2 to highlight the incredible learning that took place.
Year 6 designed these mathematical robots, which they raced up the wall, investigating how varying the angle of the winch affected the speed of ascent. Mrs Seymour was very impressed with their maths skills.
Year 5 coded instructions on our computers using the BBC microbits to give their robot faces emotions. On the left, you can see the start of the code on the computer, and on the right, the microbit robot that could smile or cry.
Year 4 designed some incredible 3d robots on TinkerCad, which are in the process of being printed on a 3d printer. On the left, you can see the design on Tinkercad, and on the right, the finished product. Year 4 were so involved in their robot learning that they even imagined themselves as robots.
Year 3 designed some amazing 2d robots using Publisher. These images were then transferred and printed using the 3d printer. They also developed a code to program Scratch Sprite to navigate the maze as you can see in the pictures on the right.
We also loved the incredible effort that went into the Robot Exhibition. Children enjoyed looking at a variety of different designs. “I loved seeing everyone’s robots, they were brilliant” – Year 5 child. A huge thank you to all the robot engineers who supported this at home!
Mini Youth Games
Last Thursday, 10 children from Year 6 attended the football Mini Youth Games at Anchorians FC. We played 8 matches across the day and played with brilliant teamwork. The children were happy to volunteer to take it in turns to go in goal and worked together to organise the formation and tactics. Some of the matches were difficult but the children continued to play with great sportsmanship and enthusiasm throughout, despite the terrible weather! After our 8 matches, Tunbury finished in 14th place out of 32 schools, so we are incredibly proud of them!
