Weekly Bulletin: Friday 13th September 2019
Having reached the end of our second week back, everyone is settling in to the new school year. It continues to be a pleasure to chat to many of you on the playground before or after school – I still have many names to remember but will do my best to do so. Also, as times goes by, my chances of being able to answer your questions are increasing!
Our online parent survey closes this evening, so if you haven’t already done so, please take 5 or 10 minutes to tell us what you think. You can access the survey at www.surveymonkey.com/r/tunburyparents We already have 67 responses, so thank you to everyone for your time and contribution. Themes emerging so far include the TSA as one of our biggest strengths and communication as one of our areas for development. Once the survey closes we will compile a full summary of your responses and include this in next Friday’s bulletin.
I do understand that home/school communication is a key issue for us at Tunbury and we will endeavour to make improvements in this area. There are some aspects that we can fix straight away and others which might take longer to address; however, please be reassured that we are working on it! We can start by sharing dates with you further in advance and as a first step, please see the dates section below for all of our class assembly dates, Christmas performances, new entrants meetings (for new Reception children applying for September 2020 places) and an open afternoon for the end of Term 1.
As our open afternoon is a new event, I’ll just take a moment to explain this. We would like to give you the opportunity to come into your child’s new classrooms to have a look at their learning at the end of their first term. I’m sure that there will be plenty of achievements that children will be really keen to share with you! This will include their books, as well as artistic and creative achievements linked to their current topics. I am a firm believer that as parents, it is easier for us to support our children’s learning if we’re kept informed, so the open afternoon is a simple first step towards this aim. The invitation to open afternoon replaces our previous Harvest Festival sessions for parents – I hope you’ll understand that our rationale is to sharpen your focus on your children’s learning. There will be opportunities for all parents to attend Christmas performances and children will still participate in a Harvest Festival within our school assembly time. Please let me know if you have any thoughts on this to share.
Have a lovely weekend everyone.
Meet our new SENCo
My name is Miss Byrne I am the new SENCO at Tunbury Primary School and the new Designated Safeguarding Lead. I have been a teacher for the last 14 years and I have moved to Tunbury from Allington Primary School, where I was a part time SENCO and a part time teacher at Five Acre Wood (a Special School in Maidstone). I have taught in Chatham before, at Greenvale Infant School and also in Beckenham and in Brixton where I was an Early Years Phase Lead and a teacher in a National Early Years Teaching Centre. I am passionate about inclusion and I want the best outcomes for all of the children at Tunbury. This term I will be offering thirty minute parent meeting slots every week for SEN and AEN children. Please contact the school office who will be able to book parents into an available slot.

Macmillan Coffee afternoon
On Friday 27th September 2019, Macmillan Cancer Support are having their annual coffee morning. Following the success of last year’s cake sale, as a school community, we would like to support this charity again and raise money for it as cancer is unfortunately, something that touches us all in some way.
On this day, we will be hosting a ‘coffee afternoon’ at school, running from 3:00pm until 4:00pm. There will be a cake sale on both playgrounds and drinks will also be available to purchase. Monies raised from the cakes will go to Macmillan and monies raised from the drinks will go to the TSA.
In order to be able to sell a lot of cakes and raise a lot of money, we are asking for parents/carers to donate a small pack of individual cakes please (such as cupcakes, mini rolls, apple pies, muffins, donuts etc) for us to then sell. Please send in your contributions on Thursday 26th September and not before. Please note, that due to allergies and intolerances, these need to be shop bought products, rather than homemade. As is our school policy, no products should contain nuts please.
Children will finish school at the usual time of 3:15pm and can then join the fundraising event with you. If you are unable to make it, but would like your child to purchase their own cake after school, they may bring in their own money (no more than £1) in a named, sealed envelope to do so.
We very much hope you are able to join the school staff for this event and will kindly donate a pack of cakes to the cause.
