Headteacher’s message to parents/carers
Dear Parents/Carers,
At this half-way point through the academic year, I’ve been sharing just how proud I am of each and every one of our Team Tunbury children and Team Tunbury members of staff. Together, they make this a very special place to work and it’s so wonderful to see how much we achieve together.
This week, as always, it’s busy, exciting and lots of fun! In Year 5, we have today’s Poles Apart day, with children ready for a day of exploration inspired by their learning about Shackleton’s expedition to the Antarctic. Over the last week, we’ve also had Pirate Day in Year 2, Wild Weather day in Year 4 and every child making their own chocolate bar in Year 3. In Year 6, children who took part in this term’s Tiger Troop had their presentation afternoon on Wednesday too.
As well as this, we have had parent consultation evenings, so thank you for coming to these appointments to celebrate your child’s achievements so far this year. I heard nothing but positivity from our parents/carers throughout both evenings. Comments like “we’re going to see the best teacher in the world!”, “we’re so proud of how well she’s doing” or “we’ve got nothing but praise for his teacher” were commonplace from parents/carers. Also, teachers said things like “I had a lovely evening”, “we’ve got brilliant parents this year” or a short answer of “perfect!” when asked how it went. Thank you for helping us to build such positive relationships among our school community.
Have a lovely half term break everyone. Remember that Monday 24th February is an INSET day, so we look forward to seeing children back in school, ready to learn, on Tuesday 25th February.
Best wishes
Ruth Austin

World Book Day: We will be celebrating World Book Day on Thursday 6th March. This year, we will be focusing on vocabulary. Therefore, we would like the children to dress up as a word of their choice e.g. vibrant, athletic, heroic, artistic, fragile, mythical, fatigued etc. The list is endless! You really don’t have to go out and buy anything extra. Please see some pictures attached for ideas. If your child already had a World Book Day costume in mind, then they could still dress as a character and choose a word associated with their chosen character. For example, Harry Potter could be associated with the words courageous and heroic. In our year groups, we will have a vocabulary parade of our words and our English Subject Ambassadors will be choosing a winner per year group so please be adventurous and creative with your word choices.
Tunbury School Council Kindness Award: This term, School Council have been promoting kindness throughout the school. All adults and children have been adding names to a kindness box and the names below show the people who have been caught showing kindness in lots of ways. Today, these people have also been awarded with a special Tunbury School Council kindness sticker as well as 5 team points.
Well done to all of these people. We look forward to giving out more kindness awards later in the school year. Remember – kindness is free, so sprinkle it everywhere!

After School Clubs: After School Clubs will not be running on the first week of Term 4, week beginning Monday 24th February.
Free School Meals and Pupil Premium: Currently, the local authority is providing Household Support Funding for families with children eligible for free school meals. For the February break families with children eligible for free school meals will receive a £10 voucher per child.
Could you apply for free school meals for your child? Did you know that the school receives extra funding called pupil premium for all children eligible for free school meals? We use pupil premium funding to improve the overall quality of education that we can offer in school, as well as providing additional resources and support. A benefit of Pupil Premium funding is that this can be used to pay for the cost of your child’s school trips, so you won’t be asked for parental contributions for these events.
To check if you are eligible for Free School Meals, please visit www.kent.gov.uk/education-and-children/schools/free-school-meals#tab-1. To apply, please visit www.cloudforedu.org.uk/ofsm/kent/.
