Headteacher’s message to parents/carers
This week, we welcomed our local authority School Improvement Advisor into school. It was a pleasure to show off the high standard of teaching and learning that children experience at Tunbury, especially as Covid disruption has meant that we haven’t been able to have an external visitor carrying out lesson visits for quite some time. The strengths noted include:
- Behaviour is good across the school – children show mutual respect and are keen to learn.
- Teachers teach well-planned lessons, which are pitched appropriately - new learning is not too easy or too hard for our children.
- Relationships are strong, between children and staff and between children themselves – Tunbury is a happy place to be!
We were delighted with this feedback and all staff will continue to do our very best for each and every Tunbury learner.
Looking further ahead, we have some exciting news: we are finalising plans to reconfigure our classroom spaces in Year 1 and Year 2, through a major building project. As you will already know, we have beautifully sized classrooms in Reception, but when children move into Year 1 and Year 2, our classroom sizes are more variable and some are just too small. We have plans to reconfigure the internal layout to improve the sizes of Blue class (Year 1) and Pink, Lavender and Orange classes (Year 2). Improving our classroom sizes will make a big difference to children’s daily experience of school life and this is an important step forward for Tunbury. This building work is scheduled to take place during the summer holidays and we will keep you posted of future developments.
Have a lovely weekend everyone. Take care of yourselves and your families.
Admissions for children starting school in September 2022: Deadlines this weekend. Kent admissions close at midnight on Monday 17 January 2022. Medway admissions close at 5pm on Saturday 15 January 2022.
Applications for a primary school place should be made via your ‘home’ local authority:
- Kent residents apply at www.kent.gov.uk/education-and-children/schools/school-places
- Medway residents apply at www.medway.gov.uk/admissions
School entry, 8.40-8.50: Both gates (side gate and playground gate) are open from 8.40-8.50 each morning. If you arrive after this time, you will need to accompany your children to the main school office.
School staff on the gates have noticed how smoothly our entry systems are now working. For example, at the playground gate, it is clear that parents are standing well back from the gates to allow the ‘flow’ of children to travel through and into school. Thank you for your co-operation in this.
Team Points: Our first points total for the new term is as follows. Holmes are in the lead – well done!
Data Collection Sheets (printed on lilac coloured paper): Thank you to parents for completing their form and returning the sheet to school. However we still have a lot of data collection sheets not returned. It is vital that we have correct phone numbers and e-mail addresses if we are to communicate with you effectively.
When you are satisfied that the information on the Data Collection sheet is correct, please sign and date the form and return to your child’s class teacher or to the school office. Please sign and return the form even if there are no alterations to be made. Thank you for your help with this matter.
New Canopy in KS2: this week Playspaces have been in school and fitted a new permanent canopy structure within our quad area in Key Stage 2. This will now mean an outside learning space is available all year round for our older children.
Vision and Values: This term during our Deputy Headteacher assemblies we will focus on our school vision and values, this week we looked at our school vision.
Tunbury is a safe, nurturing and inclusive school community where everyone is respected and valued. We inspire our children to be successful, independent life-long learners.
We discussed what a vision is and how this is at the heart of all the things we do at Tunbury Primary School. We looked at what it means and how we all have a role to play in achieving this shared goal.
Oasis Club Puzzle Request: Oasis club are really enjoying completing puzzles. If you have any complete 100 to 500 piece puzzles appropriate for Key Stage 2 children that you do not want please could you send them in with your child next week, thank you.
TSA Virtual Race Night: Reminder - Friday 28th January.
Term Dates 2022/2023: Next year’s term dates and INSET days have been published on our website:
Covid-19: We have experienced a slight increase in Covid-related absence for both children and staff this week. We always try to cover staff absence with as much consistency as possible, but please be aware that this is proving a real challenge in the current climate.
Please stay alert to possible Covid symptoms, get a test promptly if you or your child experience symptoms and follow all NHS guidance (www.gov.uk/guidance/covid-19-coronavirus-restrictions-what-you-can-and-cannot-do ). As always, it is essential that you do not enter the school site if you have any Covid symptoms.
As a reminder, if you have Covid cases in your household, our local Health Protection Team’s advice is for all other members of the household (including other children who are still attending school) to take a daily lateral flow test so that any transmission of Covid is detected as soon as possible.

Class assemblies are scheduled to take place in-person, in the school hall, on Friday afternoons. Please come to the front of the school and wait outside the hall entrance doors. You will be invited in at approximately 2.45/2.50 pm. The assembly will begin at 2.50/2.55 pm and last for about 10 minutes, finishing in time for you to collect your children at the end of the school day, as normal.
If you are visiting school for a class assembly, please wear a face covering (unless exempt) and take a lateral flow test on the day, before coming into school. Please do not attend school if you have a positive lateral flow test or any Covid symptoms. Class assemblies are held in the hall with only the class and their parents/carers present, so there is adequate space and ventilation and for this reason, attendance is not limited to 1 visitor per child for these events.
