Headteacher’s message to parents/carers

Dear Parents/Carers,

We opened our annual parent/carer survey last week, but so far, we only have 55 responses.  By comparison, last year we had 185!  Your feedback is important, so please take the time to share your views with us.  It only takes 10 minutes, but does mean a lot to us.  You can access the survey at www.surveymonkey.com/r/tunbury24 until it closes at 5pm on Monday 17th June.  Thank you.

More sporting success!  Children from our girls’ football club were super excited to play their first ever football matches against St Peters Aylesford yesterday. More information is below, but I’d just like to say how proud we were of all the girls taking part and how well they played together.  Wouldn’t it be great to have some future Lionesses in Team Tunbury!

Year 5 have been nurturing some special visitors over the past two weeks – some baby partridge chicks!  Children were enthralled to watch the chicks hatch out of their eggs, which were kept in a special incubator, before moving into a larger cage with food, water and heat pad.  The chicks got bigger, more confident and much noisier over just a few days, and I know children enjoyed sharing their lessons with them.  We’ll share some photos and videos on our Facebook page for you to see.  After leaving Tunbury today, the chicks will be looked after and then released into the wild at the right age.

Looking ahead, please see the notices section below for details of our TSA Summer Discos next Thursday 20th June, as well as the brand new TSA Tunbury Circus event on Saturday 20th July.  We also have details of the timings of Sports Day, which is on Friday 28th June.  Lots to look forward to in the summer term!

Have a lovely weekend everyone.

Best wishes

Girls Football

Yesterday, 19 girls from Year 4, 5 & 6 went to Aylesford for an afternoon of football fun with Aylesford St Peters Primary. We played some fun warm up games and then played 3 different matches! We played a 9 a side match, which Tunbury won 2-0 and a 5 a side match which Tunbury won 10-0! We then joined together to play an 11 a side match which Tunbury won 3-0. It was a fantastic afternoon with some great football, showing how much progress the girls have made since joining our after school football club. Plus, as always, brilliant behaviour and fair play throughout. Thank you to Mrs Gladdish for helping us.

Our Learning: Year 2

In Year 2 we have been enjoying our topic of On Safari. We have been comparing the UK to Africa. We have used atlases and maps to identify the geographical features. Did you know that Africa is a continent with 54 countries? We are looking forward to a visit from The Education Group who are going to teach us some African music using drums and we will be making African masks.

Last week we enjoyed taking part in Steam week. We made stop motion videos about time. Classes chose how to represent time in their videos. Orange class took us on a journey through time in Year 2 and showed our history learning. Lavender class worked in groups and showed the seasons of the year, or a life cycle. Pink class also worked in groups to create a movie linked to time travel. We found out about reaction times, and completed an experiment to see if we could improve our reactions.

We also really enjoyed our open afternoon, where we completed our Tinga Tinga art work. It was great to see so many adults in to support our learning. We used cutting and sticking to complete our pictures of African animals. Next week, we will evaluate our art work – look out for the additions to the Tunbury Art Gallery.

This week we started our end of year assessments, in which the children worked really hard and gave all of the work 100% effort. We will continue with these next week. Well done everyone and thank you parents for your support.

Sports Day: With two weeks to go, here is an overview of our plan for Sports Day on Friday 28th June.

Children will bring their PE kit home before Sports Day.  On Sports Day, children should come to school wearing their PE kit, including their PE t-shirt in their House Team colour.  They will wear their PE kit all day and do not need to bring their school uniform as well.  On the day, please ensure your child has sun cream on and has a hat.

9.50-11.30

KS2 Sports Day (for all children in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6)

This will be ‘round-robin’ Sports Day events, with children from each year group all participating simultaneously in different zones of the field.  Following this, there will be races on our track, before our KS2 Sports Day cup is awarded to the winning team.

11.45-12.30

Family Picnic on the field for all children and families - please join us!

Families will be able to sit together on the field – please bring your picnic blankets and food (no footballs/frisbees, BBQs, alcohol). You can bring picnic food as a whole family or send children in with their own packed lunches to eat with you.  During the Family Picnic, we ask children to remain around the edges of the field and not play with or move the Sports Day equipment which is left out ready for the afternoon events.

School meals on this day will be ‘Picnic Bags’. The kitchen are able to provide your child with a picnic bag but they must be pre-ordered in advance.

Children who do not have family members present will be supervised by school staff during lunchtime.  Alternatively, if you cannot attend and wish your child to join another family group for the picnic, you must tell us in advance for safeguarding purposes.

An email will be sent home on Monday with a form for you to tell us about pre-ordering picnic bags and any special supervision arrangements for the picnic.

1.00-2.30

FS/KS1 Sports Day (for all children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2)

This operates in the same way as for KS2: ‘round-robin’ Sports Day events, with children from each year group all participating simultaneously in a different zone of the field.  Following this, there will be races on our track before our KS1 Sports Day cup is awarded to the winning team.

2.45

Optional early collection for all children, using normal home time arrangements. This should be at around 2.45, but will happen 15 minutes after the end of FS/KS1 Sports Day.

3.10/3.15

Normal home time arrangements for remaining children.

After school clubs (Multiskills) will not run on Sports Day.

End of year reports: This year, we’ll be sharing our end-of-year school reports for every child via your email address, instead of by paper.  To make sure you have access to your child’s report, please make sure that we have the correct email address for you on our system.  If you would like to provide an updated email address, please send this in to Office@tunbury.kent.sch.uk  Thank you.

School dinner payments: Please continue to pay for school lunches in cash or cheques payable to TCS Education Catering Ltd. This can be sent to school in a sealed, named envelope via the school office.
