Headteacher’s message to parents/carers

Dear Parents/Carers,

This week, Black History Month has come to Tunbury.  Children were fascinated to discover two inspirational Black people who lived in Medway in Victorian times: Sarah Forbes-Bonetta and William Cuffay.  Sarah Forbes-Bonetta was a Nigerian Princess who was given to Queen Victoria as a gift, before moving to England, becoming Queen Victoria’s god-daughter, spending her weekends at Buckingham Palace and living in Canterbury Street in Gillingham.  William Cuffay was a Victorian union leader who fought for workers’ rights, demanding a reduction to a 10-hour working day for tailors, before being convicted and sent to Australia.  Both Sarah and William have interesting stories to tell, giving a new perspective on local history and Victorian history.  They are both commemorated locally, with Sarah’s blue plaque at Palm Cottage in Canterbury Street and William’s blue plaque at Chatham Dockyard.  Thank you to our new Reception TA Mrs Halpin for helping us to discover them.  Following this introduction, children in Years 1-6 have continued their own learning about Black History this week by conducting their own research – please ask them who they are learning about and what they have found out.

Next week, please come and visit us in school for our Open Afternoons.  Parents/carers are very welcome to come into school to see children in their classrooms – we want to share children’s learning with you and celebrate their successes so far this year!  Open Afternoons are such an effective way to experience learning in your child’s classroom, meet their key staff in school and get involved in their learning.  If you can join us, please come to the front gate of the school and wait outside the school office - we will then invite you in at 2.00.  After enjoying an hour of Tunbury learning, at 3.00 we’ll ask you to leave classrooms and move to the playgrounds for home-time collection as usual.  (The only exception to this is for Year R, we’ll invite you to help your child get ready for home time and then leave together from the classrooms at 3.00-3.10.)

As a reminder, our guidance and dates for Open Afternoons are as follows:

  • This year, families are not limited to one visitor per child, but please be mindful that even our newly enlarged classrooms will be very crowded!
  • Please do not use your mobile phone during Open Afternoons. Ideally, all mobiles should be switched off. Taking photos, sending messages or making calls is not allowed while in our school buildings.
  • If younger siblings come with you to Open Afternoon, we ask you to be responsible for making sure that they are well supervised and not disturbing others. School staff may ask you to leave the classroom if younger siblings are really noisy – thank you for your understanding.
  • There is no space for pushchairs or buggies in the classrooms, but you can leave these items in the playgrounds ready for you to collect at home time.
  • All Open Afternoons are from 2.00-3.00. Year 5/6 on Monday, Year 3/4 on Tuesday, Year 1/2 on Wednesday and Year R on Thursday.

At Open Afternoons, our TSA are kindly helping us to set up a Uniform Swap Shop, which is something we wanted to offer to our families due to current financial pressures caused by the cost of living crisis.  We’ll have second-hand Tunbury uniform and PE kit laid out ready for you to pick up during Open Afternoons.  If you have any unwanted Tunbury school uniform (in good condition) at home, please bring it along with you and swap it for something that you do need!

Have a lovely weekend everyone.

Best wishes

Our Learning: Year 2

This term in year 2, we have been enjoying our learning about Toys. This week we have started looking at non-fiction and will be writing our own information page about our favourite toy. We will be using questions, headings and facts to make our writing interesting for the reader.

For Black History Month we found out about Lenny Henry. He has worked hard to support other people less fortunate than ourselves by setting up the charity Comic Relief. Some parents or grandparents might know him from his TV series The Lenny Henry show. In 2015 he was knighted by the Queen for his work. We are looking forward to sharing what we have found out in assembly next week. Have a look at some of our fact pages:

In History we have been learning about the history of toys. We have played with some toys from the Victorian era and made a timeline of toys through History to the present day (see below) As part of toy day we will be sharing our ideas to answer the questions would you swap your toy for a Victorian one?

In Science we have been investigating materials by squashing, squeezing, twisting and pulling a range of objects. We have compared the different properties of materials and recorded our results in different ways.

Here is Orange class with our toys on toy day:
