Headteacher’s message to parents/carers

Dear Parents/Carers,

Thank you to the family members who were able to join us for our Year 1 Open Afternoon this week.  Visitors came into our classrooms and helped children create some wonderfully designed moon buggies, as part of their Design Technology learning.  We know that you really like coming into school, but did you know that your children also love it just as much, if not more?  Our Year 1 children were so excited that you could come in – here is what children in Yellow and Red classes said about it afterwards:

  • “Your Mummy and Daddy can help you if you get stuck.”
  • “It’s nicer to show them what you do at school because when you go home you can’t always remember everything.”
  • “My Grandad had never seen inside my classroom before!”
  • “My Nan told me some things to add to my moon buggy and it was really cool.”

Just a reminder - both our Year 3 and Reception Open Afternoons are next week, then Years 2, 4, 5 and 6 are after half-term (see the diary dates section for details).   All Open Afternoons are from 2.00-3.00pm.

As I mentioned at the start of term, children have been working so hard to improve their writing this term.  Next week, we’ll be awarding a Star Writer certificate to one child in every class, as well as celebrating the achievements of many, many more.  Great writing calls for effort, stamina, ideas, enthusiasm and lots of practice, but success brings a sense of pride and achievement, as well as a result that everyone can see.  We’ll showcase some fabulous examples of writing next week, but in the meantime, please do encourage your child to pick up a pen/pencil and write at home….. shopping lists, letters, diaries, stories, labels, captions, or anything else!

Have a lovely weekend everyone.

Best wishes

Ruth Austin

Trial singing and piano lessons: As part of the development of music provision at Tunbury Primary School, The Math Music Academy provides individual singing or piano lessons.  The Department of Education has recognised that either singing or learning the piano improves a child’s learning, confidence, concentration and social development.  Further studies have also concluded that students who studied a musical instrument in primary school were almost one year ahead of their non-musically trained peers in their Maths, Science and English performance.

The Math Music Academy will be holding free 15 minute trial sessions week of the 17th June for interested pupils wishing to commence lessons in September. During these trial lessons for singing the teacher will do basic exercises, note recognition and some repertoire.  For piano the teacher will introduce the key board, understanding of fingering and notes.  Students have the opportunity to work towards school performances and concerts as well as graded examinations with both ABRSM and Trinity boards.

If interested, please email the music teacher Mrs Sophie Hyde on sophiehyde@aol.com by Friday 14th June to register for a free trial giving your child’s name and class.

Sun hats, sunscreen and water: Now that the warmer weather is here at last, we would like to remind you about sunscreen, hats and water.  Please can you make sure that you child has sunscreen applied before they come to school.  They can bring a named bottle of sunscreen to keep in their school bag for reapplying at break times, if they are able to apply it themselves.  Please also make sure that your child has a bottle of water in school as well as a sun hat.

School dinner payments: Please continue to pay for school lunches in cash or cheques payable to TCS Education Catering Ltd. This can be sent to school in a sealed, named envelope via the school office.
