Headteacher’s message to parents/carers

Dear Parents/Carers,

Today is our Science Day!  Children have enjoyed a special Science assembly with our visiting expert, where they met Jeff the robot, saw an amazing elastic-band-powered plane and learned about dinosaur poo!  As well as this, children took part in class-based activities with the theme of ‘Growth’.  Please ask your child what they got up to today – we hope that they have lots of exciting things to tell you about…

As many parents are aware, we have experienced an increased number of Covid cases over the last two weeks, affecting both children and staff.  Although contact tracing has ceased and we no longer send out NHS ‘warn and inform letters’, this wave of Covid is a reminder that we all need to remain vigilant for symptoms and follow the current national guidance regarding staying at home.  Further details are at:  When to stay at home if you have coronavirus (COVID-19) and what to do - NHS (www.nhs.uk)  Thank you for your support.

Several parents have mentioned road safety concerns recently, with concerns about inconsiderate/unsafe parking and driving around the school site at drop off and pick up times.  Every family and child should feel safe and be safe on their journeys to and from school.  We do still have a vacancy for a School Crossing Patrol (SCP) to work on Tunbury Avenue - we have been trying to fill this vacancy since December, when our previous SCP left the role, with no luck so far.  If you know of anyone who could be our new ‘Local Hero’, we have details of the role and application forms in the school office.  Alternatively, please contact SCP@kent.gov.uk for further details about this rewarding role.  While we do not have a SCP, please take extra care around school and please do not park at the crossing point, on double yellow lines or in bus stops.  Thank you for your support.

Have a lovely weekend everyone.

Best wishes

Ruth Austin

Support for low-income families: There are two elements of support available this Easter break for families entitled to benefits related free school meals:

  • Free School Meal (FSM) Provision for the Easter Breaks: £30 per child will be allocated for the Easter holidays. As in the previous holidays eligible parents will receive an email from Evouchers. The Household Support Grant, has provided support to the most vulnerable families this winter. This grant has been used to fund supermarket vouchers for families eligible for free school meals for the Christmas, February and Easter holidays. The agreed amount of funding for eligible children is £15 per child per week.
  • Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) Programme: free exciting, enriching activities for children and young people during the school holidays, with healthy, nutritious food. The HAF programme also supports children’s physical and mental health and wellbeing. Children aged 4 to 16 years, who are eligible for benefits related free school meals, can access these opportunities in the Easter holidays.

If you do not already receive FSMs for your child and your financial circumstances have changed recently, you may want to check if you are eligible for FSMs please visit https://www.kent.gov.uk/education-and-children/schools/free-school-meals#tab-1.  To apply please visit https://www.cloudforedu.org.uk/ofsm/kent/.

Easter holiday activities: Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council’s holiday activities for Easter 2022 is now available to book. The scheme for 4-16 year olds features a range of activities, workshops and clubs which are offered by local providers to help keep children stimulated and active during the holidays. There is also a significant discount available for families on low incomes who hold a Leisure Pass.

The activities are now available to view at www.tmbc.gov.uk/holidayactivities

All bookings should be directed to each provider as stated on the website.

Covid-19: We have seen continued high case numbers in school this week, affecting both children and staff throughout the school.  Although contact tracing has ceased and we no longer send out NHS ‘warn and inform letters’, we all need to remain vigilant for Covid symptoms.

Reminder: please follow the current national guidance on Covid and check this if you or your children experience Covid symptoms or a positive case.  Further details are at:  When to stay at home if you have coronavirus (COVID-19) and what to do - NHS (www.nhs.uk)  Thank you for your support.
