Headteacher’s Message

Dear Parents/Carers,

Welcome back to the start of Term 2.

Our first week back has been STEAM week (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths). On Monday, teachers created a range of mixed-aged challenges on the theme of flight for teams of Year 1-3 or Year 4-6 children to complete. For example, how would you protect an egg from breaking in the egg-drop challenge? How can you make effective 'gliding objects', parachutes or paper aeroplanes?  It was great to see children showing brilliant teamwork, as well as stretching their Science brains. There will be many more opportunities for mixed-aged teamwork this year as part of our ongoing work to create better cohesion within the school community.

Some staffing news for you – we are delighted to have appointed a second Deputy Headteacher, Greg Taylor, to join us in January 2020.  Mr Taylor is an experienced teacher who brings plenty of school leadership expertise to Tunbury.  On his interview day he taught a great Maths lesson to Indigo class, who certainly gave him a big thumbs up!  We look forward to welcoming Mr Taylor to the Tunbury team.

School councillors met this week to finalise our plans for Children in Need.  We are going to be getting active with a Joe Wickes 'Big Morning Move' (see www.bbcchildreninneed.co.uk/schools/primary-school/fundraise-with-joe-wicks) at 9am on Friday 15th November.  So for this day, children can come to school in their own clothes/sports clothes for a donation of £1.  School councillors also suggested 'add-ons' to the non-uniform options, with an extra 50p donation for any of the following options: wearing yellow, spots or Pudsey items.  We hope that everyone will enjoy getting involved in fundraising for such a high-profile and worthy cause.  Looking further ahead, the school council have yet to decide on which charities to support for the Spring and Summer terms, so please ask your children to share any ideas with their school council rep.

Finally, we held the first of our New Entrants meetings this week for parents and children looking for a Reception school place in September 2020. We were very busy, with lots of interested adults and children visiting the school. Emerald class were our tour guides this time and did a fabulous job - well done! We are holding three further New Entrants meetings (see www.tunbury.kent.sch.uk for dates) - please contact the school office to book onto one of these events.

Have a lovely weekend everyone - see you at the Fireworks!

Best wishes

Ruth Austin
