Headteacher’s message to parents/carers
In Tunbury News this week, we have started working on some art projects to brighten up our school environment. Our artist Andy has begun to work on a brand new mural opposite Magenta and Indigo class. Here is the picture so far….
We look forward to seeing this artwork take shape over the next week or so, then seeing where else in school Andy will be off to next!
Reading reminder: you may remember that last year we worked hard to raise the profile of home reading with our families, encouraging all of our children to read regularly at home. Thank you again to our parents and carers for finding the time to support your children with home reading – please remember that this is one of the most valuable, simple and enjoyable ways for you to support your child’s learning at home. If you are new to Tunbury or looking for additional support, you’ll find ‘how to read with your child at home’ videos on our school website at https://www.tunbury.kent.sch.uk/News/ . Thank you!
Have a lovely weekend everyone.
Our Learning: Year 4
Our topic this term has been ‘I am Warrior!’, which we started with a Roman theme day. As part of our learning we developed our understanding about the mighty Roman army. We have learnt about the different ranks within the Roman army, their battles and how they protected themselves. Thinking carefully about how we would protect ourselves in a battle, we created our own Roman soldiers and dressed them in the appropriate clothing and armour. In addition, we also created our own Roman mosaics and participated in a game of Roman football.
In English, we began focusing on a picture book called ‘Escape from Pompeii.’ Year 4 have written some fantastic setting descriptions based on the eruption of Mount Vesuvius and retold the story through a diary entry. The children have worked extremely hard to use a range of tools within their writing to engage the reader. Recently we have moved onto a chapter book called ‘The Sewer Demon,’ we are learning all about a little boy called Threptus and the adventures he experiences in the Roman city of Ostria. Last week the children consolidated their use of adjectives and similes when writing character descriptions based on our new book. This week the children are becoming the main character of the text and writing a letter to retell the journey of Threptus so far.
Our science topic this term is based on investigations; we have been discovering lots about science! Each week we have taken on another scientific question to solve. We have learnt how to create a fair test; this is very important when recording data accurately.
This term our art learning has been a sculpture project. We started with looking at different sculptures and discussing our views. We have consolidated our sketching skills and use of techniques by experimenting with sketching pencils. We practiced drawing using different shapes, lines and shading.
Year 4 loved making the Roman soldier sculptures, they worked incredibly hard to follow their designs, use different sculpting techniques and create texture and detail using clay tools.
We are looking forward to painting them!
In maths this term, we have been exploring place value. As part of our learning we have been making and reading numbers with up to 5 digits using place value counters and base 10, describing the value of each digit. We have learnt how to place numbers in ascending and descending order and round to the nearest 1000. More recently, we have explored counting in steps of 25 and we used chalk in the outdoor areas to practice drawing number lines with negative numbers. We have continued to practice times tables daily in class. Over the next few weeks we will be developing our understating of addition and subtraction using written methods.
This week we made links between maths and science through investigating how thermal insulators affect temperature. We chose different materials to wrap around a ball of ice and used thermometers to track the temperature change throughout the day. By calculating the difference in the temperature of the ice at the beginning of the day and at the end of the day we could identify the best insulating material.
School Library: We are now ready to start cataloguing our school library. Could you help us with this? We need help with sorting through books, for example sorting our fiction books into genres and picking out our more ‘ancient’ books which will not remain in the library. Please contact the school office on email@example.com if you can volunteer your services. Thank you.
Team Points: Here are the Team Points totals at the end of this week. It’s still a very green term – well done Attenborough!
After-school extra-curricular clubs: We plan to restart extra-curricular clubs after October half term. Further details to follow.
Year 2: As part of Year 2’s 'Inside the Toybox' topic, our year 2 children are invited to bring one of their favourite toys from home into school on Thursday 14th October for one day only. Year 2 will be using the toys to inspire a piece of non-fiction writing in their English lesson. Please encourage your child to choose a toy that is not too big or valuable. Year 2 are looking forward to the excitement this day will bring!
Viking Day: As part of Year 5’s topic our year 5 children will be having a Viking day on Friday 15th October. Children are invited to dress up for this day – home-made costumes are fine.
Change of Menu: There will be a change to the published menu next week. On Thursday 7th October Italian Day lunch will be served. Please see details on the separate email sent.
Flu Immunisation Programme: Please see the letter in the Parents - letters and forms section which was also emailed to parents earlier this week.
Please note the e-consent portal closes on 10/11/2021, 3 working days before our schools immunisation session, and NHS cannot accept late consents or consents on the day of vaccination.
If any parents/carers are having issues completing the online consent form, they can call the immunisation team CAT on 0300 123 5205 or the local Medway office on 01634 337 666 and they will be able to go through the consent form with you over the phone.
Covid-19: Please stay alert - it is essential that we all remain vigilant for Covid symptoms. As before, if you or your children are experiencing Covid symptoms, do not approach or enter the school site. Continue to follow the current Covid guidance – you can check this at www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/
