Weekly Bulletin: Friday 20th May 2022
Headteacher’s message to parents/carers
We’re excited to share our plans for the Tunbury celebrations for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Although the national events and extra bank holiday take place in half term, our main celebrations will be on Wednesday 8th June. On this day, children can wear red, white and blue to school instead of school uniform and we’re planning a family celebration on the field at the end of the day, from 2.45-3.45. Please see the flier in the letters and forms section for further details.
In school, our seven year groups will be learning about the seven decades of The Queen’s reign, with Year 6 starting off with the earliest decade (1952-1962) working through to Year R learning about the most recent decade (2013-2022). We’ll also be replacing the Tunbury flag on our flagpole with a union jack, distributing a special Platinum Jubilee book to every child and having an extra day off! The end of the school year is now on Thursday 21st July, rather than Friday 22nd July (this change was shared with parents/carers when it was confirmed by KCC in December).
Later on this year, in the Autumn term, we’ll also be creating a new Platinum Jubilee mosaic. This will be updating and replacing our Golden Jubilee mosaic at the front of the school, which was created by Tunbury pupils and staff 20 years ago, in 2002. We’ll be keeping some of the elements of this mosaic in our new design and every Tunbury pupil will contribute to making the new mosaic. Thank you to our fabulous TSA for funding this project.
Our sense of community is important to us at Tunbury and events such as this are a great way of bringing us all together. As we said in assembly this morning, Together Everyone Achieves More!
Have a lovely weekend everyone.
Our Learning: Year R
This term, we are learning all about how things grow! We have been keenly observing the tadpoles developing into froglets right here in Year R and ae looking forward to releasing our little friends very soon once they are ready for a new life in the pond.
Through the text, Tadpole’s Promise, we have learned about food chains and hope that The Very Hungry Caterpillar might make it to be a beautiful butterfly! We are enjoying developing our gross motor skills through assault courses and are working hard in the Reception Garden, digging and planting potatoes.
In phonics, we are pleased to be building confidence in sounding out trickier words (phase 4) and the children are working hard on reading with expression. Some children are enjoying Helicopter Storytelling so much they’ve decided to start writing their own stories, rather than wait for the grown-ups to write them down! In mathematics, we are exploring teen numbers and building understanding of the composition of numbers, using addition and subtraction through storytelling to support understanding.
In Forest School sessions we have been observing the changing seasons. We have been on bug hunts and can name lots of different mini beasts within in our school grounds. We have been observing the different kind of birds and have noticed that a Blue tit has nested in a bird house within our Forest school area! We now know lots about life cycles and can use lots of scientific vocabulary including naming the different parts of a plant.
Year 2 SATs week: Well done to all of our fabulous Year 2 children for the positive way in which you completed your SATs tests this week – we are really proud of your effort and determination.
School Ties: We now have stock of school ties available in the school office to buy - £3.50 each. If you would like to purchase a tie, please pay via School Money. Following payment, please collect your tie from the school office.
TSA Krispy Kreme donut sale: On Thursday 26th May, TSA will be selling Krispy Kreme donuts after school on the top playground. If you would like to pre-order please see the TSA Facebook page for further information.
Team Points: This week’s team points are as follows, with Rowling still in the lead in our penultimate week of term.
Parking: We have had some concerns this week about irresponsible parking around the school site, with parents/carers parking on double yellow lines, in the bus stops or at the crossing point. We do not currently have a School Crossing Patrol to help our children cross the road outside school, so we need to be particularly careful about parking at this time. Please be considerate of other road users in your parking choices: it’s essential that we all do this to keep our children safe. Thank you.
Covid-19: We continue to ask you to check the current guidance if you experience symptoms or a case of Covid. Further details are at: Coronavirus (COVID-19) - NHS (www.nhs.uk)
