Headteacher’s message to parents/carers

Dear Parents/Carers,

What a fabulous week!  Our absolute highlight was the Samba drumming workshops on Monday, Tuesday and today, in which every single child was able to participate and feel the rhythm of Brazil!  Our instructor Rudy guided each class through a drumming masterclass, in which children learned complex rhythms on the drums and tins.  He also explained how Samba is part of a Brazilian culture of celebration – it certainly brought the energy to Tunbury!  At the end of the day, each class participated together in a showcase featuring the different rhythms which they had all learned.  Why not ask your child what they thought about Samba?

The Samba drumming workshops were the first of our whole-school enrichment events paid for from TSA funds, to enable all of our children to experience something brand new and to share this experience with others.  At Tunbury, our aim is to create lots of happy memories for children to look back on, and we hope that enrichment events like the Samba Drumming are an extra way of achieving this.  We’re already wondering what to book for next year!

This TSA funding is only possible thanks to your participation and support for our TSA events.  Yesterday, we had lots of happy children bouncing around in the school hall for our Summer Discos, which were lots of fun.  Thank you to our TSA volunteers for making this possible.

Next week, we’re looking forward to seeing you all in school for Sports Day.  Please take a look at the timings and arrangements for Sports Day (in the notices section of this bulletin).  We’re hoping for a rain-free day, so fingers crossed….

Have a lovely weekend everyone.

Best wishes

Ruth Austin

Sports Day: Here is an overview of our plan for Sports Day next week, Friday 28th June.

Children will bring their PE kit home before Sports Day.  On Sports Day, children should come to school wearing their PE kit, including their PE t-shirt in their House Team colour.  They will wear their PE kit all day and do not need to bring their school uniform as well.  On the day, please ensure your child has sun cream on and has a hat.

KS2 Sports Day (for all children in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6)

This will be ‘round-robin’ Sports Day events, with children from each year group all participating simultaneously in different zones of the field.  Following this, there will be races on our track, before our KS2 Sports Day cup is awarded to the winning team.

Family Picnic on the field for all children and families - please join us!

Families will be able to sit together on the field – please bring your picnic blankets and food (no footballs/frisbees, BBQs, alcohol). You can bring picnic food as a whole family or send children in with their own packed lunches to eat with you.  During the Family Picnic, we ask children to remain around the edges of the field and not play with or move the Sports Day equipment which is left out ready for the afternoon events.

School meals on this day will be ‘Picnic Bags’. The kitchen are able to provide your child with a picnic bag but they must be pre-ordered in advance. Today is the last day for orders.

Children who do not have family members present will be supervised by school staff during lunchtime.  Alternatively, if you cannot attend and wish your child to join another family group for the picnic, you must tell us in advance for safeguarding purposes.

An email was sent home on Monday with a link to a form for you to tell us about pre-ordering picnic bags and any special supervision arrangements for the picnic. This is the link: Picnic Bag order and Child's supervision

FS/KS1 Sports Day (for all children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2)

This operates in the same way as for KS2: ‘round-robin’ Sports Day events, with children from each year group all participating simultaneously in a different zone of the field.  Following this, there will be races on our track before our KS1 Sports Day cup is awarded to the winning team.

Optional early collection for all children, using normal home time arrangements. This should be at around 2.45, but will happen 15 minutes after the end of FS/KS1 Sports Day.

Normal home time arrangements for remaining children.

After school clubs (Multiskills) will not run on Sports Day.

Staffing update: From September, our Reception and Year 1 Phase Leader Mrs Palmer will be spending one year on secondment as Deputy Headteacher at Platt CE Primary School.  Congratulations to Mrs Palmer on this appointment, and we look forward to having you back at the end of the year!  While Mrs Palmer is away, Mrs Fitzgerald will be our Reception and Year 1 Phase Leader.

End of year reports: This year, we’ll be sharing our end-of-year school reports for every child via your email address, instead of by paper.  To make sure you have access to your child’s report, please make sure that we have the correct email address for you on our system.  If you would like to provide an updated email address, please send this in to office@tunbury.kent.sch.uk  Thank you.

Diversity Week: From Monday 15th July to Friday 19th July, our Diversity Ambassadors would like everyone to experience the customs and traditions of different cultures.  What better way to immerse the children in this than to learn about the cultures within our Tunbury community?  Therefore, we are asking if there are any parents/ carers or family members who would be willing to share their cultural customs and traditions with classes or year groups within the school.  Please contact the school office if you are able to help: office@tunbury.kent.sch.uk

TSA Circus: The circus is coming to Tunbury Primary School on Saturday 20th July! We have the amazing company Circus Pizaz joining us this year for our summer circus! There are 3 show times to choose from and tickets are £6.50, however as an early bird offer - Children's tickets are currently £5 until 30th June.

It's going to be a fantastic event so we hope you can join us! Book your tickets to the circus now at:

If you don't want to come and watch the circus show, there is still lots of fun to be had as there will be hot/cold drinks, hot food, sweet treats, cakes, crazy golf, glitter/face paint, giant inflatable slide, a fun fair ride, games, craft stalls, henna, bungee trampolines and a bar! (General entry is free or by donation and you do not need to book tickets if you are not coming to watch the circus show).

School dinner payments: Please continue to pay for school lunches in cash or cheques payable to TCS Education Catering Ltd. This can be sent to school in a sealed, named envelope via the school office.
