Headteacher’s message to parents/carers
Dear Parents/Carers,
It’s Comic Relief Red Nose Day today. Comic Relief is a fabulous charity which supports people experiencing poverty, both in the UK and abroad. In assembly on Monday, children thought about Comic Relief’s mission to support people who are “being forced to make truly impossible choices, every single day” because of poverty. Children thought about what these “impossible choices” might be, suggesting things like children having to sell precious items or Mums and Dads choosing to feed their children rather than eating dinner themselves.
At Tunbury, we encourage our children to be kind and generous. This year, Team Tunbury has supported lots of different charities. We raised £525 for Children in Need, £293 for Save the Children Christmas Jumper Day and £241 for NSPCC Number Day. We raised money for the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal and donated 305.5kg of food and toiletries to Medway Food Bank at Harvest time. Also, today, our Reception children are raising money and awareness for World Down Syndrome Day. Amazing work everyone! We really are making a difference to our local, national and international community!
As part of Red Nose Day today, children are wearing red and telling jokes. We held joke competitions in each class and the winners from each class read their jokes in assembly this morning. Our Joke Judging Panel (ie School Councillors) listened carefully to each joke and decided it was too close to call between their two favourite jokes. The winning jokes were:
Question: Why doesn’t the sun go to college?
Answer: It already has 1000 degrees! Told by Ethan in Scarlet class. Very funny!
Sung by Blake in Lavender class. Also very funny!
Donations to Comic Relief can be made today via: www.justgiving.com/page/tunbury-primary-school
At the time of writing (on Friday morning) we have raised £321 so far. Thank you for your support.
Have a lovely weekend everyone.
Best wishes
Ruth Austin

Our Learning: Year 1
This term Year 1 have travelled back in time to the Victorian Era to answer the question...How was a Victorian childhood different?
Last week, we visited Kent Life to immerse ourselves in Victorian Life as a Victorian Child. We found out what jobs Victorian children might have done and we were all measured up to be chimney sweeps. Luckily for us we have all now gained employment! Victorian school was stricter than Tunbury is today and we carefully wrote our names in chalk on a slate. We saw a Victorian house, which to our surprise has no bathroom or toilet...yuck! We helped Ethel the scullery maid with the laundry and met Florence Nightingale who taught us how to be a nurse and bandage wounded soldiers. To keep our floors warm, due to the lack of carpet in the Victorian period, we learnt how to make rag rugs.
This week, we have experienced life as a poor Victorian child, being sent out to work - making bread in the workhouse, sewing new clothes and making toys for the rich children. Luckily for us we earnt 1 penny to buy our bread for dinner at the end of the day. We have written diary entries based on our experiences and have studied different authors from this period.
Also, in maths we have extended our number knowledge up to 50, partitioning into tens and ones and using a number line to identify where these numbers appear in the counting sequence.
Notices
Free School Meals and Pupil Premium: Currently, the local authority is providing Household Support Funding for families with children eligible for free school meals. For the Easter holiday, families with children eligible for free school meals will receive a £20 voucher per child.
Could you apply for free school meals for your child? Did you know that the school receives extra funding called pupil premium for all children eligible for free school meals? We use pupil premium funding to improve the overall quality of education that we can offer in school, as well as providing additional resources and support. A benefit of Pupil Premium funding is that this can be used to pay for the cost of your child’s school trips, so you won’t be asked for parental contributions for these events.
To check if you are eligible for Free School Meals, please visit www.kent.gov.uk/education-and-children/schools/free-school-meals#tab-1. To apply, please visit www.cloudforedu.org.uk/ofsm/kent/
Travelling Book Fair: A huge thank you to everyone who came to support the Travelling Book Fair this year. It was a great success and we are grateful to all members of staff who helped to run this for us. We are thrilled to receive £662 in commission to spend on books for the classrooms. Commission is earned on your purchases, so thank you so much for supporting the fair and buying books for your children. The children have already begun shopping for new books!
Police Community Support Officer Visit for Years 5 and 6: One of our PCSOs will be coming into school on Monday 31st March and Tuesday 1st April to deliver online safety talks to our Year 5 and 6 pupils. The focus of these talks will be regarding advice when accessing certain social media sites such as Snapchat, Whatsapp and Roblox.
School Meals: TCS are having a taster week next week. Children will be able to come and try some of the food. Please let us know of any allergies, that we are not already aware of, so that we can inform the kitchen.
In addition the new Spring/Summer menu, which started on Monday, has been published on our website, including an allergen matrix.www.tunbury.kent.sch.uk/Parents/School-Meals/.
TCS have agreed a lower increase to the cost of a school meal than the cost previously advised. With effect from April 2025 the cost of a school meal will be £2.65.
Weekly bulletin and communication from school: Did you know that we try to reduce the number of emails we send you every week by saving up all of our news and information for one big weekly bulletin? This means that although we contact you less frequently, we do try to make it easier for you to keep track of in-school events by summarising everything in one go, in our weekly bulletin. We also publish key dates (eg Sports Day, Class Assemblies) in one long list at the start of the year, for the whole academic year ahead.
Also, did you know that our weekly bulletin is always published, every Friday lunchtime, on our website at www.tunbury.kent.sch.uk/News/ . This means that as well as being emailed to primary contacts on our distribution list, anyone else (eg Nanny or Grandad) can always go to the school website on Fridays to see what we’ve been up to this week.
Finally, did you know that for even more photos or news, you can check in with Tunbury Primary School facebook at Tunbury Primary School | Chatham | Facebook. Recently on Facebook, we have updates from Turquoise class in Year 5 and Reception.
Tunbury Primary School Facebook page: We can only share photos of children where we have specific parental permission for Facebook photos. So, if you would like your child to feature on our Facebook page, please use this link to update your image consent: Facebook Consent /form
Girls’ Football: Last Friday we held our second Let Girls Play event, where we encouraged as many girls as possible to play football at lunchtime. We had 88 girls joining in across EYFS, KS1 and KS2. The girls all had a great time and clearly increased in confidence throughout their sessions. There are still some places in our girls’ football club on a Monday for Year 3 to 6 if any girls would like to join in.
Online Safety: We’re sharing Online Safety information, using resources from the National College’s #WakeUpWednesday program. This week’s guide is on streamers. Please see the Parents > Letters and forms section of the website.
Weekly Class Attendance: This is a weekly feature on our bulletin to highlight and celebrate good levels of attendance. For a second week in a row, Yellow Class are our KS1 winners. With an astonishing 100%! Great work from Yellow Class! Our new KS2 winners are Amber Class with a fantastic 99.57%. Well done everyone and keep up the good work!
