Headteacher’s Message

Dear Parents/Carers,

Congratulations to our brand new Year 6 peer mediators – following their training before Christmas, these children received badges and certificates in assembly on Monday and have been on duty for the first time this week. Peer mediation is a new initiative for Tunbury and it works through trained mediators supporting younger children in resolving minor conflict or playground disagreements. Peer mediation does not replace adult supervision or staff involvement in more serious incidents or cases of bullying, but it can be extremely effective in resolving friendship-based disagreements where both parties want to take part in mediation. Our peer mediators are on duty during KS2 lunchtimes and so far this week, they have helped to resolve a number of different issues. They are identifiable by their purple peer mediator bibs and children in Years 3-5 can approach them directly for help, if needed.

Also this week, Mr Taylor, Mrs Smith and I have begun our latest round of lesson visits to see teaching and learning in action. So far, we have visited all classes in Year R, Year 3, Year 4 and Year 5, with all other classes being visited next week. As usual, we have been extremely impressed by consistently strong learning behaviours and the high levels of interest and enthusiasm shown by children (and teachers!) for learning. Together, we’re all working on a project to improve children’s peer assessment, so that our learners can give each other increasingly accurate feedback on their success in any lesson or task.

Finally, could I draw your attention to a couple of dates in the diary for this term. Following the success of our first Open Afternoon in the Autumn term, we will be opening our doors again from 2.00 on Wednesday 12th February. This is a valuable opportunity to come into your children’s classrooms and experience some learning alongside them, so please join us if you can. We have also scheduled our next Parent Forum for 5.00 on Thursday 19th March. We hope that by varying the times and days for our Parent Forum meetings, more of you may be able to attend.

Have a lovely weekend everyone.

Our learning Year 4

One of our topics this term is ‘The Normans’ and last week, the children in Year 4 enjoyed and took part in a range of practical activities with Peter the Peddler and their class teachers.   The children were shown a wide range of artefacts and replicas which helped develop their understanding of how the Normans lived a thousand years ago. You may have already seen their coins which were made in class, these coins the children learnt were literally cut up during trading and bartering. Having seen replicas of battle armour, they made their own helmets and took part in making a Norman Castle. Through the class text book in English, ‘I Was There, 1066’, the children are continuing to learn about the Normans and the Battle of Hastings.

  • Year 3 – Stone Age themed Day: On Friday 14th February Year 3 will be having an exciting Stone Age themed day.  The day will include a variety of activities which focus on all areas of the curriculum.  The children are encouraged to wear clothes from either the Stone Age period or clothes an archaeologist would wear for the day. Children should make sure they have sufficient clothing to keep warm at playtime and after school.
  • Eco Warrior meeting- January 2020: The Eco Warriors have been meeting with Miss Gooch-Draper and Miss Harman and have come up with some brilliant ideas to help make our school more eco-friendly. They have also been checking to make sure classroom lights and projectors are switched off when they are not in use! Ideas from the pupils:
    • Creating posters and signs to promote walking to school rather than driving
    • Having ‘topic sheets’ in books to divide each topic rather than starting a new book for a new topic when there is still space left in the book
    • Using an alternative to single-use plastic pots at lunch (used for cheese, jelly etc.)
    • Creating a flower bed on the field
    • Planting more native trees (Woodland Trust scheme)
    • Laminating less to reduce plastic waste
    • Having recycling bins in every class or year group

If you or your child has an idea, please let us or one of the Eco Warriors know!

  • We are looking for another Local Hero! Not a School Crossing Patrol this time, but a new Site Manager. Unfortunately, our current Site Manager Mr Evans is planning to retire at Easter, so we are recruiting. The advert is now live at www.kent-teach.com/Recruitment/Vacancy/VacancyDetails.aspx?VacancyId=77298
Please mention this to anyone you know who would be interested in this rewarding role – thank you.

  • Starting at Primary School for September this year: The deadline for applications for reception class places in September this year has now passed. However if you have missed the deadline KCC online admissions system (www.kent.gov.uk/ola) is still open for parents until 10th February. This means that parents can apply online and receive an offer on Primary National Offer Day (16th April) as long as it is submitted by 10th February.
