Headteacher’s message to parents/carers

Dear Parents/Carers,

This week, we are starting to feel a little bit Christmassy, with some Christmas songs and Nativity rehearsals beginning in school.  We look forward to sharing these with you – please check our Diary Dates for the events for your child’s year group.

For children in Year 6, last week was a wonderful opportunity to spread their wings at their residential trip to PGL.  All the staff who accompanied the trip said that children were a real credit to themselves and Team Tunbury, showing fabulous determination, togetherness and a sense of fun!  The Year 6 children who stayed in school also had a fabulous time, enjoying their activities – plenty of cooking, food and creativity – and a lovely relaxed in-school atmosphere.  We are so proud of them all.

THANK YOU for all of your donations to Children in Need last Friday.  Altogether, our Tunbury Total was £496.  Today, we announced our winners of ‘Design your own Pudsey’ competition for each year group, shown below.

This week, I have spent time visiting lessons in all of our Year 1 and Year 2 classrooms, which was a real pleasure, as always!  I was delighted to see universally positive behaviour in every classroom, with children being super keen to learn and so proud of their work.  In Year 1, children visited a ‘crime scene’ inspired by the story of Jack and the Beanstalk, and then used adjectives to describe what they saw.  In Year 2, children were learning about lines of symmetry in a variety of different shapes, using mirrors, and had some really tricky challenges to solve.  Throughout every class, teachers and teaching assistants were working together and giving children precise feedback on their learning, to help them move onto their next steps.

Tomorrow, please join us for our TSA Christmas Fair, in-school from 1pm to 4pm.  We’ll have games and stalls, food and drinks, a Christmas choir, special character guests and external stallholders for great Christmas gift ideas.  You don’t need to ticket to come to the Fair, but if your child would like to visit Santa’s Grotto, there are a very few tickets remaining, so please pre-book your slot at The Tunbury School Association (TSA) (pta-events.co.uk)  We look forward to seeing you there!

Have a lovely weekend everyone.

Best wishes,

Ruth Austin

Headteacher

Pudsey

Well done to everyone that took part in our Pudsey competition and donated via our justgiving page for Children in Need.  The designs were so creative and imaginative, it was hard to choose our winners!  Well done to:

Year R – Billy (Owls class)

Year 1 – Rylee (Blue class)

Year 2 – Alessia (Pink class)

Year 3 – Daisy (Amber class)

Year 4 – Lily (Lilac class)

Year 5 – Madison (Indigo class)

Year 6 – Not done due to PGL

Diversity Leaders Assembly

This week our wonderful Diversity Leaders led an assembly all about the UNCRC (United Nations Convention for the Rights of the Child). They spoke about rights children are given from birth and how we all have to take responsibility to uphold these rights, to make sure that everyone is given equal and fair opportunities.

Adaebube, who is part of the Diversity Group, enjoyed leading this assembly so much she wrote her own poem, with some influence from other authors.

‘In a world where dreams come alive

Our faces with eyes so bright

Children’s rights a guiding gleamy glow

Every heart, every child in equal height

On the playground, where laughter fills this place

Friendship blooms with warmth so rare

Cultures weave a tapestry so right

Children’s rights, a promise we declare

In the classroom, knowledge dances in the mist

Books and crayons, colours shining bright

Equality for all, like stars so shiny

Children’s rights, our guide, our shared, our birthright!’

Our Learning Year 6

Our topic for terms 1 and 2 has been ‘Ancient Greece.

Last week, the majority of Year 6 enjoyed three days on our residential trip at PGL at Marchants Hill.  The trip was a resounding success – all children were impeccably behaved and threw themselves in to every activity with maximum enthusiasm.  With a high number of climbing related activities, the trip provided the perfect opportunity for children to show their resilience and overcome their fears.  The variety of activities offered by PGL was fantastic but two clear favourites were the giant swing and zip line.

We also had an amazing group of children remain in school with staff during this week and they took part in a range of activities.  The children enjoyed engaging in activities such as sewing and baking pizzas as well as creating their own board games.  Friday afternoon was a real treat for them with the children enjoying snacks and hot chocolate whilst watching a film chosen by them. We’re so glad that they also had a wonderful week.

Over terms one and two we have been writing over a range of genres including a newspaper article on The Battle of Marathon and our own Greek style myth which has been published as a class book of Greek myths.

Over the last two terms, in science we have been looking at Evolution and Scientific investigations. These investigations have been linked to some of the wonders from the Ancient Greek world including Archimedes Principle and water displacement. The investigations have given the children the opportunities to think and work like a scientist.
