Headteacher’s message to parents/carers

Dear Parents/Carers

Keeping our children safe is our utmost priority at Tunbury.  This takes many different forms and this week, we have focussed on Road Safety.  This is important because something as simple as crossing the road is actually one of the most important safety skills that children need to learn.

To teach road safety, we have used Kent Road Safety videos in every class this week.  Children found them engaging and informative at every age group, from Reception to Year 6.  If you would like to view these videos, or re-watch them with your child, you can access them at Kent Road Safety Club - KCC Road Safety  Our message to all parents/carers is as follows:

The Kent Road Safety team believe that road safety education is a vital part of a child’s primary and secondary learning and we know parents want to be involved too. Children in Kent primary schools are currently learning some key messages and you can play a part by helping to deliver and reinforce roadside training every time you go out and about.

  1. Talk to your child about road safety whenever you are out and about.
  2. Encourage your child to talk to you about keeping safe near roads.
  3. Lead by example use the Kent Road Safety Code;
    • STOP before the kerb
    • LOOK and LISTEN for traffic
    • THINK about what to do
    • CROSS the road safely with an adult, looking and listening all the time

An additional note for parents/carers of our older children: please do not assume that road safety is only relevant for younger children who are learning to cross the road for the first time.  Children who walk alone or with friends to primary or secondary school are our most high risk group for pedestrian road traffic accidents.

Thank you for your support in keeping our children safe.

Finally, on another note…World Cup news: we had a fabulous afternoon in school on Monday as we offered all children the opportunity to watch England v Iran in their classrooms.  As you might imagine for such an action-packed match, there was a great atmosphere and a lot of cheering!  We hope that this was a memorable experience for our children – I wonder if you can remember watching (or not being allowed to watch!) a World Cup match when you were at school?

Have a lovely weekend everyone.  If you’re watching the football this evening – come on England!

Best wishes

Ruth Austin

Headteacher
