Headteacher’s message to parents/carers
Dear Parents/Carers,
This week, our Netball team did Team Tunbury proud in winning the Fair Play Award at the Mini Youth Games netball tournament! We are so proud of them all for showing such a positive attitude – our Year 6 children are amazing ambassadors and responsible role models for our school. Please read Ella’s account of the day (in the Notices section) to find out more.
Also this week, we were so pleased that our Reception children enjoyed their first ever school trip, visiting a local farm. This was a wonderful experience, sparking curiosity and creating new learning experiences for our youngest children. Please read the ‘Our Learning’ section to find out more.
This term, children across Tunbury Primary School are striving to do their very best in all of their learning, as always, but with a special focus on children’s writing. Teachers in every class are creating meaningful opportunities for children to write, through our ‘perfectly published’ pieces of work. At the end of term, we’ll also have a Star Writer award in every class. For a couple of examples of published writing from both ends of the school, please take a look at the samples of writing from Reception and Year 6 below, linked to this week’s learning experiences. Fabulous!
Have a lovely weekend everyone.
Best wishes
Ruth Austin
Headteacher
Our Learning: Year R
This term, in Year R, our topic is Super Growing! We have been looking at growth and change. We have been sharing the story, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, and are excited at the arrival of our own real caterpillars. We are watching intently as the caterpillars change over the next few weeks.
On Tuesday, we went on our first ever school trip, to Bluebell Barn Farm in Meopham. The children thoroughly enjoyed the coach ride and were excited to embark on their farm adventure from the get-go. We learned about the different jobs on the farm; even the dog, Millie had a special job, to herd the sheep back to bed! Children were hands on and they helped to feed the orphaned lambs a warm bottle of milk. The children loved the little lambs in their cosy jumpers which they wore to regulate their temperature in the barn. We marvelled over the bluebells in the woodland and hope you enjoy the pictures from our special day.
We have been looking at the photographs from the visit and the children have been inspired to write about their experiences.

Mini Youth Games Netball: Ella’s account of the day.
“On Tuesday, a team of 10 Year 6s played at Rainham Girls School for the Netball Mini Youth Games, representing Tunbury Primary School. There were some very competitive teams according to our team, but we are very proud. And so are the amazing teachers – Miss Landa-Arrese and Mrs Gladdish. There were 13 rounds across the day, but we played around 9 or 10, and like I said, it was tough at times, but we did so well and we are just absolutely amazed.
Out of 24 schools, we came 22nd. This is just unbelievable how well we played. Although we didn’t come close to winning – which we are very happy about – it ended on an even more positive side.
For the other award (fair play), top three schools, we were not expecting this. “Tunbury!” called out the person who was handing the awards out. We had won the fair play award! This meant the other schools and umpires (who were Rainham Girls students) had mostly voted for us for being the most respectful and fairest team/school out of all 24. We believed this was more amazing than winning, as it is a much more wonderful celebration, showing that we may only have won one game, but we showed our teamwork and respectful determination towards all.
That is most of the information about the Netball Mini Youth games hosted at Rainham School for Girls on Tuesday 23rd April 2024.
Here now is a picture of the Tunbury Netball Team and our Trophy. Thank you to all the outstanding Year 6s and brilliant teachers for this amazing day”.

Team Points: Our first Team Points totals for Term 5 are as follows, with Holmes team in the lead by just three points! In assembly today, children voted on the Team Point reward which will be ready for the winner of this term’s race. With one vote for each class, the winning choice was ‘sports on the field’, which just beat ‘free time in the IT suite’ as children’s preferred option. We’re looking forward to see which team wins!
