Headteacher’s message to parents/carers

Dear Parents/Carers,

Welcome back to school for the start of Term 4!  The sun is shining and Spring must be just around the corner.  On Monday’s INSET day, staff training was on the OPAL project, which will transform children’s play experiences during their school lunchtimes, over the next 18 months. Please see our website for further details tunbury.kent.sch.uk/Opal/ . Watch out for some big changes coming up – we can’t wait to share them with you!

In each year group, children have been starting their new topics, full of enthusiasm as usual.  Facebook reminder: for quick updates and photos of in-school events, you can follow us at Tunbury Primary School | Chatham | Facebook.  This week, we have photos of a mystery footprint being investigated by Year 2 and some amazing animals visiting school in Year 1.

Next week, it’s Book Week!  We’re looking forward to a celebration of reading throughout the week.  This year, we’ve scheduled all of our Spring Open Afternoons in Book Week, so please do come and visit your child’s class, if you can.  It’s Year R on Monday, Years 1/2 on Tuesday, Years 3/4 on Wednesday and Years 5/6 on Friday, all at 2.00-3.00.  Each session will be reading-themed, but in a different way for different year groups.

As well as this, we have our annual World Book Day dressing up day on Thursday.  This year, as well as the traditional character dress-up, we’re encouraging children to come to school ‘dressed as a word’.  In assembly today, we looked at some ‘dressed as a word’ photos from another school.  For example, we saw children dressed as ‘fragile’ (ie wrapped in bubble wrap), ‘horrifying’ (a bit like a trick-or-treat outfit), ‘contagious’ (spotty with facemask), ‘colourful’ (very colourful, obviously), ‘constellation’ (covered in stars and planets) and my personal favourite, ‘juxtapose’ (why not ask your child what this word means and what the outfit looked like – good luck).  I’ve even challenged Year 6 to make their word as unusual as possible!

We look forward to seeing everyone’s brilliant outfits in school for World Book Day next Thursday.  To give our celebrations an extra impact, this year we’re inviting you to send us a photo of your child/children dressed up for the day, along with the word they represent, to us via email (office@tunbury.kent.sch.uk) so that we can share these photos on our Facebook page.  Please take and send your photos before children come into school (we know that this is probably when they are looking at their best!) and we will share them as soon as we can, on the day.

Have a lovely weekend everyone.

Best wishes

Ruth Austin

Travelling Book Fair – The book fair will be in school from Thursday 6th March until Tuesday 11th March.  The children will have the opportunity to visit the book fair in their classes on Thursday 6th March before it officially opens for purchasing books after school.  Children will also come home with their World Book Day £1 voucher today.  This can be used at the book fair to receive a £1 discount on any book.

Paying for books at the fair has changed slightly this year.  All payments will need to be made online.  Payments can be made by scanning the QR code on the Payment Guide which will be displayed at the fair or at travellingbooks.co.uk/pay and searching for the school using our postcode ME5 9HY.  You will need to bring your bank card with you if your card details are not already saved to your mobile phone.

World Book Day: We will be celebrating World Book Day on Thursday 6th March. This year, we will be focusing on vocabulary. Therefore, we would like the children to dress up as a word of their choice e.g. vibrant, athletic, heroic, artistic, fragile, mythical, fatigued etc.  The list is endless! You really don’t have to go out and buy anything extra. Please see some pictures attached for ideas. If your child already had a World Book Day costume in mind, then they could still dress as a character and choose a word associated with their chosen character. For example, Harry Potter could be associated with the words courageous and heroic. In our year groups, we will have a vocabulary parade of our words and our English Subject Ambassadors will be choosing a winner per year group so please be adventurous and creative with your word choices.

Online Safety: We’re sharing Online Safety information, using resources from the National College’s #WakeUpWednesday program.  This week’s guide is on What Parents and Educators need to know about Marvel Rivals. Please see the letters and forms section on our website.

Weekly Class Attendance: This is a weekly feature on our bulletin to highlight and celebrate good levels of attendance. In KS1 this week, we had two winners! Blue Class and Red Class for the second week running. Outstanding from both classes! Ruby Class are our KS2 winners with a fantastic 98.72%. Well done everyone and keep up the good work!
