Weekly Bulletin:Friday 28th June 2024

Headteacher’s message to parents/carers

Dear Parents/Carers,

It’s a short bulletin this week, as we’re all currently out on the field enjoying Sports Day.  We’ve been lucky with the weather this year and it looks like parents won’t be finishing the day wearing your picnic blankets for warmth, like you were last year!  A full report on Sports Day will be in next week’s bulletin.

A final reminder of today’s timings is as follows:

Playground gate open for entry*

KS2 Sports Day (for all children in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6)

Playground gate open for entry/exit*

Family Picnic

For Reception and Key Stage 1 children, you will collect from classroom doors at 11.45, the start of the family picnic, as you do at hometime.

Key Stage 2 children will come out onto the field in their classes and be dismissed to you individually just after 11.45.

At the end of the family picnic, a bell will be rung and all Tunbury children will return to their classes.

FS/KS1 Sports Day (for all children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2)

Optional early collection for all children, using normal home time arrangements. This should be at around 2.45, but will happen 15 minutes after the end of FS/KS1 Sports Day. Please ensure you have signed the class list before leaving with your child.

Year 5/6 children that walk home alone will only be able to leave school without an adult at 3.15.

Normal home time arrangements for remaining children.

* If you wish to arrive or leave school at other times throughout the day, please enter/exit via the front gate.

Have a lovely weekend everyone.

Best wishes

Ruth Austin

Our Learning: Year 6

This term in science we have begun our ‘Animals including humans’ topic, which has involved us learning about the circulatory and digestive systems. The children researched how the heart functions and then produced some fantastic explanation texts about this. They were incredibly detailed, including technical vocabulary and diagrams.

Once the children knew how blood is pumped around the body, the next step was to discover the four different components of blood. The children then created their own models of blood, with the four components of plasma, platelets, white blood cells and red blood cells being represented by yellow-dyed water, purple pom poms, mini marshmallows, and red-dyed Cheerios respectively. The children found it fun to represent blood in this way, although were very tempted to eat the marshmallows and Cheerios!

Next up was learning how humans digest nutrients and water. The children found this more challenging but were eager to learn how our body is able to digest food in a way that means we get the correct nutrients to help us function. After watching a video that showed a body digesting food, they were able to order and explain the different processes involved.

In art, we have begun an artist study of Michelle Jarder. After researching some of her work, the children were able to identify that she creates photos that look like a person is moving by using the panning technique. They were excited to attempt this themselves so we headed outside and the children created their own photographs in Jarder’s style, which we were very impressed with!

Our D.T. work this term has seen the children working as a team of designers who have been given the design brief of designing a nightlight. The children have researched different types of nightlights and their next step will be to explore more complex electrical circuits which will allow the nightlight to react to its environment- illuminate and change colours depending on the brightness of natural light. In order to achieve this, the children will be learning to use code.

We have also been working very hard on our Year 6 production! The children were initially a bit overwhelmed when first rehearsing on the stage, but they are really coming into their own! Lots of them have learnt their lines and are now working on volume and acting. It has been so lovely to see them become more confident in themselves. Their singing is sounding…. beautiful! We can’t wait for you to see the show on the 19th July.

School ties: We have stock of school ties in the office- cost £3.50. These can be purchased via School Money and collected from the school office after payment. schoolmoney parent login

Diversity Week: From Monday 15th July to Friday 19th July, our Diversity Ambassadors would like everyone to experience the customs and traditions of different cultures.  What better way to immerse the children in this than to learn about the cultures within our Tunbury community?  Therefore, we are asking if there are any parents/ carers or family members who would be willing to share their cultural customs and traditions with classes or year groups within the school.  Please contact the school office if you are able to help: office@tunbury.kent.sch.uk
