Headteacher’s message to parents/carers

Dear Parents/Carers,

Mrs Austin’s highlight of the week… This week, I visited our Reception classrooms.  Our youngest children have made excellent progress since starting school in September, so it is lovely to see how far they have already come!  When I visited, all of our children were engaged in their learning, for example exploring numbers through the concepts of ‘one less’ and making number bonds to 5 or 10, as well as making some beautiful Mothers’ Day cards.  Outside, children were exploring pipes, tunnels and shelters, working collaboratively with their peers to play and learn together.  Fabulous!

Reminder: Tunbury is united against bullying.  This year, we’re repeating our Anti-Bullying survey three times, in November, March and July.  This is an individual survey for children in Years 1-6, asking whether they have experienced or seen any bullying in their class.  In our March Anti-Bullying survey, we were pleased to find a significant drop in the number of children reporting worries about bullying.  We do build support for children so that they always have trusted adults they can talk to, if anything is worrying them.  Also, children can always report any bullying concerns in our STOP boxes, so they don’t have to wait for the next survey to speak out.  Please support your child by talking to them about Anti-Bullying.  In school, we have found that the survey does help to get children and adults talking about this important subject.  At home, if you have any concerns, please tell us via our STOP@tunbury.kent.sch.uk email address for parents/carers (your version of the in-school STOP boxes), so that we can help you and your child.

Whilst bullying remains very rare, we do maintain a high level of vigilance and immediate intervention in any suspected or alleged cases of bullying.  We have modelled our approach on best practice in Anti-Bullying, using the Ten Key Principles of preventing and responding to bullying, as identified by the Anti Bullying Alliance.  For your reference, here is a reminder of Tunbury’s Anti-Bullying communications:

Thank you for your support.

Have a lovely weekend everyone.  For everyone celebrating Mothers’ Day on Sunday, we hope that you have a wonderful day!

Best wishes

Ruth Austin

Our Learning: Year 2

This term in Year 2 we have been learning about castles in our history lessons, describing the features, defences and life in medieval times. We are answering the key question ‘How do castles compare to other buildings?’ The children had a visit from Jeremy who works at the Guildhall Museum who told us all about the raid on Medway in 1667 and how it involved Upnor Castle. The children tried on uniforms and held artefacts from the battle including a real cannonball!

In art this week we have been practising the techniques of rolling, pinching, pressing, cutting and carving clay. We then used these techniques to help us sculpt a castle tower and added detail by carving in a brick texture to the outside of our towers. Some children added windows, arrow loops and stairs!

We have also enjoyed comparing and measuring the mass of objects using grams and kilograms. The children have explored holding different weights and objects and looked carefully at balance and circular scales to determine the mass of real life objects including a sack of potatoes and a bag of flour.

Sandpit: Exciting news!  We are building a giant sandpit, around the boats on the edge of the field.  This will be open for children to play in during lunchtimes, along with other zones and options for play.  We have marked out the area for the sandpit this week in preparation for the works to be started during the Easter break.  This work is funded by the TSA – thank you!

We would like to open the sandpit straight after Easter.  More information on this will be shared with children in due course.  Please could you help us get ready for this by donating any play items that children could use in the sandpit?  All donations need to be in good condition (not broken/cracked/sharp) and will be collected at the gates next week, from Monday.  Please see below our sandpit ‘wishlist’.  Thank you so much for your help.

Tunbury Primary School Facebook: At Tunbury we like to showcase the wonderful activities and work that children take part in which means that at times we like to display children’s work and/or photographs on our Facebook social media platform.   This week on Facebook, we have posts on the TSA present room, Spring concert and learning in Lavender class, all at Tunbury Primary School | Chatham | Facebook

We can only share photos of children where we have specific parental permission for Facebook photos.  If you are happy for your child to feature on our Facebook page, please use this link to update your image consent:  Facebook Consent /form or return the paper consent form sent home via your child earlier this week.

Easter Disco: Thursday 3rd April.  Please support the TSA and buy tickets at The Tunbury School Association (TSA) if you wish your child to attend.  Please note, Year 2 will be on their trip to Upnor Castle on this day.  They need to wear school uniform to the trip, so if they are going to the disco as well, they will need to bring in a change of clothes.

After School Clubs: Due to Thursday’s disco, Scrapbook club will not be taking place next week.  Dance Club and Coding Club will still be on.  Next week is the final week for this series of clubs.  Details of the new clubs for Term 5 and 6 will be sent out to parents as soon possible.

Online Safety: We’re sharing Online Safety information, using resources from the National College’s #WakeUpWednesday program.  This week’s guide is on the Bluesky app. Please see Parents>Letters and Forms section of our website.

SEN support: Please see SEN support detailed below that you may be interest in.
