Headteacher’s message to parents/carers
Dear Parents/Carers,
This week, we’ve started our Library trips to Walderslade Village Library, with Sapphire class visiting yesterday and Azure class visiting today. Everyone enjoys a walk downhill into the village and hopefully we don’t even mind that it’s uphill on the way back! At the Library, children choose and take out a book at their first visit, to have and read at home, and then they return the book at their second visit. Our aim is that the Library visits help to promote a love of reading and show children the wonderful (and totally free) local way to get books to read. We all know that being a good reader a crucial element of educational success, both at primary and secondary school, so if you are also able to take your children to the Library, that would be fabulous. The Library is open til 6pm on Tuesday-Friday and 10-4pm on Saturday. Thank you for any support you can offer.
Also this week in school, Pink, Yellow and Lavender classes enjoyed their Great Fire of London theatre workshop. They met Samuel Pepys and were able to ask him lots of insightful questions, like “Why did you bury your cheese and wine?” This was a really memorable and fun way to bring learning to life! Thank you to our Year 2 team for making it such a success.
Looking ahead to next week, as it will be the start of Advent, we will be starting our Christmas activities, including the TSA Present Room and our Christmas visits to Walderslade Baptist Church. Lots to look forward to!
Have a lovely weekend everyone.
Best wishes
Ruth Austin
Headteacher

New Entrants for September 26: Our next Stay and Play session is on Monday 1st December 9-10 am. The Stay and Play sessions are brand new for this year, for pre-school aged children (aged two and a half or older) to attend with a parent/carer. The session lasts an hour and will take place in our Reception classrooms and outdoor learning areas. It's the perfect chance for your child to play and get to know us here at Tunbury. Our friendly staff will be there to guide you and answer any questions you may have.
Also, we also have our small group school tours. Our next tours are on Tuesday 2nd December (12.45 and 1.45) and Friday 12th December (9.00 and 10.00). The dates of all our events are on our website at www.tunbury.kent.sch.uk/New-Entrants/ To book onto any of these events, please email newentrants@tunbury.kent.sch.uk
Remember that applications for a primary school place are open now and should be made via your ‘home’ local authority.
- Kent residents apply at www.kent.gov.uk/education-and-children/schools/school-places
- Medway residents apply at www.medway.gov.uk/admissions
Vehicles on the school site: Please be reminded that parents/carers are not permitted to drive their vehicles on to the school site, other than in an emergency situation. If you need to drop/collect your child or visit the school office, please park outside the school and enter the school via the front pedestrian gate.
Anti-Bullying Surveys: As you’ll already know, we have a strong Anti-bullying policy at Tunbury, which was further strengthened last year by our new in-class Anti-bullying surveys, which now happen three times per year. Children will remember filling in this survey and discussing it with their class teacher. As well as this, Senior Leaders are currently reviewing all of the survey responses. However, we always remind children that you don’t need to wait for the next survey to report any concerns about bullying. As well our caring staff team who spend every day alongside our children, we also have our STOP boxes, where children can report any bullying concerns. The word STOP helps us remember what bullying is and how to respond to it - Several Times On Purpose - Start Telling Other People. For parents and carers, just a reminder that you have your own version of the in-school STOP box, an email address where you can also report any bullying concerns at STOP@tunbury.kent.sch.uk
Class Christmas Parties: In the last week of term, each class will have a class Christmas party (see ‘Dates for your Diary’ below). Please provide some snacks in a named container for your child to have at the party. As we are a ‘No nuts school’, we ask that you refrain from sending in food items containing nuts. Children can come in school in their party clothes on the day of their party.
TSA Christmas Present room:

Christmas Lunch and Christmas Jumper Day is Friday 12th December: If you wish for your child to have Christmas Lunch, it will need to be pre-booked via the School Gateway app. If you are unsure of how to do this please see the information guides on our website: https://www.tunbury.kent.sch.uk/Parents/School-Meals/ Please pre-book on the app by Wednesday 3rd December.
Pupil Leadership: We have now completed our Pupil Leadership appointments for this academic year. We received 235 applications for a variety of different roles this year and we would like to congratulate all children who applied and went through the interview process.
This week, we would like to celebrate our Peer Mediators, who are already doing a fabulous job with support from Mr Mitchell! Peer mediators can help younger children to resolve minor disputes or playground disagreements in an amicable way. Children can always see them on the playgrounds at lunchtime, wearing their bright yellow Peer Mediator sash, so they know who to approach for help.
