Headteacher’s message to parents/carers

Dear Parents/Carers,

This week, we’re following up on Anti-Bullying week, explaining these messages to children, staff and parents/carers.

As a reminder, in Anti-Bullying week, all children in Years 1-6 completed an individual survey asking them whether they had experienced or seen any bullying in their class, since September this year.  The survey enabled children to discuss any concerns with their class teachers, which is so important to make sure that children’s voices are heard and their concerns are acted upon.  At Tunbury we are totally committed to making our school a place where children can play or learn without the fear of bullying.

We monitor instances of bullying very closely throughout the school year, with this information also being shared (without identifying any specific children involved) with our Governing Body.  Since September, there has been one confirmed instance of bullying at Tunbury.  With over 500 children in school, we are pleased that this number is not higher, but we also know that just one case of bullying is one too many, because of the impact that this has.

So we know that bullying is very rare at our school, but where it does happen, we need to know about it so that we can take action to make it stop.  We want to hear about any concerns about bullying, so that we can make it stop.  Children can tell any Tunbury adult or use our STOP boxes.  For parents/carers, just a reminder that we now have a ‘STOP box for parents’ in the form of our STOP@tunbury.kent.sch.uk email address.  Please use this email address to raise any concerns that you have about bullying affecting your child.

Following on from our Anti-Bullying survey, there is one related issue that has cropped up in lots of conversations between children and teachers, as well as being raised in School Council.  Put simply, this issue is kindness.  Children report that very occasionally, they see other children being unkind in school, for example by telling others to ‘go away’ or ‘shut up’ on the playground.  This is not usually part of bullying and it might sound like a small thing, but there is no place for unkind or rude behaviour in our school.

Here is a reminder of Tunbury’s Anti-Bullying communications, which are all available on our website:

We have modelled our approach on best practice in Anti-Bullying.  As such, we are proud to uphold the Ten Key Principles of preventing and responding to bullying, as identified by the Anti Bullying Alliance.

Have a lovely weekend everyone.

Best wishes

Our Learning: Year R

On the last term, the Year R teaching team had the opportunity to really get to know about Year R children and their families to work in partnership. So Bears and Owls children are now really settled into school life.  Children are following and understanding routines well and are getting very independent in the mornings and through the day with learning activities.  All children in the mornings place their named feeling sticks into the different feelings pots and discuss with us how they feel so we can support them to be happy and develop friendships.

We have sung many rhymes and learnt new songs.  Currently are practising our Nativity songs for our performance to parents on the 11th of December!

Children have become increasingly confident with phonics learning and families are supporting their reading progress hearing their children read 5 times a week at home.

We have started our Forest School sessions this term and everyone has learnt our keep safe in our Forest rules and we have begun to explore our woodlands looking for signs of the changing Seasons.

We have been very creative and made things like an autumn leaf character and fireworks printing pictures when learning about Bonfire night!

In Maths, we have been learning about numbers to 5 and shapes.  We have learnt to create our own repeating patterns.

We have been learning about many different celebrations this time of year such as Diwali and Hanukkah and children are enjoying following some of the traditions for the different celebrations.
