Headteacher’s message to parents/carers

Dear Parents/Carers,

What a wonderful week of warm sunny weather!  It’s been the perfect week for our lunchtimes to move into ‘summer mode’, with children on the field every lunchtime, as well as in the Glade and on the lower playground.  Along with the lunchtime opening of our new sandpit, we’ve also had music playing so that children (and staff!) can dance, cricket games on the field and creative work with children making daisy chains and grass cities.  We are so lucky to have so much lovely outside space!

Just a reminder: although there is shade available around the field, in the Gazebo and in the Glade, on sunny days please do remember to send your child in with a hat to wear outside and sun cream already applied in the morning.

Also this week, I’d like to welcome Mrs Abdullah to Team Tunbury.  Mrs Abdullah is our new Assistant Headteacher and Senco, who will be working full-time with us in September but is joining us for 2 days per week in the summer term.  At the same time, we currently still have our Interim Senco Mrs Harris still working with us 1 day per week, so we are lucky enough to have two qualified and experienced Sencos working with us at the same time.   Mrs Abdullah is looking forward to getting to know everyone over the coming weeks and months.

One of my highlights of this week has been children’s enthusiasm for learning and sense of fun.  For example, I have visited Pink class (in Year 2) a few times recently and it’s a real delight to see how much progress they are making as we approach the summer term.  We often find that children’s learning is at ‘top speed’ at this time of year, and our super-learners in Pink class are no exception.  Well done and keep up the hard work!

Have a lovely (long) weekend everyone – back to school on Tuesday next week.

Best wishes

Ruth Austin

Netball Mini Youth Games

Last Thursday our Tunbury netball team took part in the Mini Youth Games at Medway Park.  Miss Landa-Arrese and Mrs Gladdish took 9 children from year 4 and year 6 who all did a magnificent job of representing Tunbury Primary School.  Across the day the team played 9 matches with 4 minutes halves and were required to play in all of the different hi-five netball positions.  We are extremely proud of how the children conducted themselves throughout the day, showing each other support and encouragement and nothing but respect for other teams, umpires and other adults at the centre.  The team also enjoyed spending time watching some of the other matches throughout the day and it was wonderful to see the team put into action the skills they have been working hard on this year at our netball club, and some super goal scoring moments too!

The scores for the day were

0-1 to Halling Primary School

0-0 against Gordon Primary School

4-1 win against Fairview Primary School

1-0 win against Deanwood Primary School

0-0 against Napier Primary School

1-4 to Brookfield Junior School

2-2 draw against Balfour School

3-0 win against Cliffe Woods

Well done Tunbury netball team, we are all very proud of the effort and dedication that you have displayed towards our club and our school.

Our Learning: Year 3

This term our topic is Anglo-Saxons. We have been reading Beowulf and have been enjoying learning about his exciting triumphs! In our writing, we have been focusing on speech. We used role-play to act out an interview with Beowulf and then wrote an article detailing this. Here are some examples.

In RE we have been looking at different people’s beliefs about God. After exploring the beliefs in Christianity, Hinduism and Islam, we discussed our own differing ideas. We then designed our own picture of what we think God would be like. Here are some examples.

Our science topic this term is Forces and Magnets. So far, we have been learning about contact forces. We investigated how a contact force occurs when two objects physically touch. We looked at different items and identified whether they use a push force, a pull force or both. We have also been investigating how to change the shape of some objects by exerting a force on them, such as twisting, squeezing or squashing. During the investigation, we thought about which contact force we were using (either push or pull).

To begin our Anglo-Saxon topic, we looked at Anglo-Saxon runes. We explored why they are called runes and what they look like. The children then practiced writing their name using runes. Here are some examples.

The first example says “Isaac” and the second example says “Oliver”. The third example says “Maggie. I have two pets. A cat and a hamster. I have an older brother.”

We are looking forward to learning more about Anglo Saxons during our themed day today!
