Headteacher’s message to parents/carers

Dear Parents/Carers,

It’s been a challenging day with power and kitchen issues!  We are very sorry for the disruption this has caused to our children and families, but I can assure everyone that we have done our very best to adapt to a tricky situation.  The power was off from around 8.30am this morning, but children were safe and happy in classrooms continuing with their learning.  It wasn’t until just after 10.45am that a sewage leak in the kitchen (linked to non-operational macerator in the kitchen toilet) caused our catering contractor TCS to inform us that they could not prepare lunch in the school kitchens.

This gave us less than one hour’s notice before the start of KS1 lunchtime, but thank you to everyone who was able to provide a packed lunch at such short notice.  Also, TCS staff were able to travel to a neighbouring school kitchen and return with cheese or tuna wraps and some desserts, which clearly is not ideal (or as tasty as Friday fish and chips).  After hard work from our midday meals supervisors, teaching assistants and teachers all pulling together, we were able to ensure that all children were offered a meal for lunch.  The power was back on before lunchtime and the rest of the day has been smooth.  Thank you for your understanding and support with these issues.

Before today, my absolute favourite moment this week was the Year 1 tea party, where parents were invited to join children in the hall for a very special occasion, inspired by ‘The Tiger Who Came to Tea’.  Children were so excited to write their invitations, make their sandwiches and share the event with their special adults.  We even had a visit from the Tiger himself, who luckily was on his best behaviour on this occasion!

Finally, just a reminder that we sent out information this week regarding our Spring parent consultations on Tuesday 11th and Thursday 13th February.  Bookings opened yesterday so please do make an appointment to see your child’s class teacher and look at their work so far this year.

Have a lovely weekend everyone.

Best wishes

Our Learning: Year 1

Our topic this term is ‘Amazing Animals’ and we have been looking at the book ‘The Tiger Who Came to Tea’ by Judith Kerr. We wrote an invitation to our special adults inviting them to afternoon tea. We then learnt about instructions and wrote instructions for how to make a sandwich. We then made our sandwiches for our afternoon tea. We also designed and made pizza. We have also written about our afternoon tea!! Did you know a real tiger came too!!

In maths we have been learning about numbers from 11 to 20. We have found out that these are called teen numbers and they are made up of one ten and ones. We have also found one more and one less than a given number within 20. We have also been learning about number lines.

In our topic lessons we have been finding out where our food comes from. We have also been learning about physical and human geographical features. We are enjoying learning new songs in our music lesson and have been finding out about how we show we care for each other as well as animals and the environment.

We are really enjoying all our learning and can’t wait to find out more!!
