Weekly Bulletin: Friday 3rd December 2021

Headteacher’s message to parents/carers

Dear Parents/Carers,

As this week is the start of advent, we have been looking ahead to the Christmas season.  Children and staff have been decorating our hall and classrooms and we have lots of festive fun to look forward to this year…

  • Christmas Dinner and Christmas Jumper day are both on Friday next week.
  •  We’re holding a competition to find the ‘most Christmassy classroom’, with judging by our School Councillors. Some classes are really going the extra mile!
  • Children in Year R, 1 and 2 are preparing for their Christmas productions, so the sound of their lovely singing is filling the hall. I was lucky enough to visit our Reception children in a rehearsal this week and I have to say that they are already doing a marvellous job!
  •  Year 3/4 and Year 5/6 are learning their songs for their Carols on the Playground.
  • Children will be having Christmas parties in their classrooms on Thursday 16th December and they can wear their own clothes to school, for the whole day, on this day. (We’re not asking children to bring in food or drink for the parties this year, to reduce Covid risks.)
  • On the same day, we’re looking forward to the TSA Christmas Elf Door Trail, which is outdoors after school. Details at https://www.pta-events.co.uk/tunbury/#.YanSg9DP2Ul
  • The TSA also have other Christmas events planned, including the Christmas Present Room (which will move outdoors this year to reduce Covid risks), Christmas hampers and Christmas raffle, please see details below in the Notices section.

All of our Christmas events are in the ‘Dates for your Diary’ section below.

Have a lovely weekend everyone.  Please take care of yourselves and your families.

Best wishes

Ruth Austin

Online Safeguarding Notice

Please see below a link to our safeguarding page on the Tunbury school website where you will find a letter for parents and carers from the Education People and Kent Police about pupil behaviour online. Unfortunately, there have been a number of incidents involving students from Kent creating accounts on TikTok relating to their teachers or using images of their teachers.

Tunbury Primary School - Safeguarding

All of our pupils are taught how to be safe and behave appropriately online, but we can only be successful in keeping children safe online if we work together.  It is important that as adults, we take an active interest in our children’s online lives and show a willingness to engage in the digital world with them.

The National Crime Agency Child Exploitation and Online Protection Command (NCA-CEOP) have a website which is suitable for children aged 5-16 and has a section just for parents/carers with advice and information.

The NSPCC have produced resources for parents. Their website covers excellent advice for parents about issues such as online grooming, nude image sharing and cyberbullying, as well as specific advice for children with special educational needs and disabilities.

The Childline website has a wide range of information and advice on both online and offline safety for children. There is information about online gaming, grooming, and the Zipit App which helps children feel empowered when confronted with inappropriate chat online. They also provide a helpline for children to get advice over the phone: 0800 1111

UK Safer Internet Centre provides a wide variety of advice and guidance to help you discuss online safety with your children. There are useful checklists for privacy settings on social networks and suggestions to consider before buying devices for your children.

Childnet has resources, including videos and storybooks, to help you discuss online safety with your children. It includes advices on setting up parental controls, cyberbullying and setting up a family agreement for safer internet use.

Internet Matters bring you all the information you need to keep your children safe online. It has a tool which guides you through how to set up parental controls on all the different devices in your home to protect your children.

No clubs next week: As previously advised in the original Clubs letter, after school clubs will not be running for the last two weeks of term i.e. next week and the week after. They will start again after the Christmas holidays - week starting 10th January 2022.

Christmas Productions: Year R, Year 1 and Year 2 will be holding Christmas productions this year and would like to invite you to come along and watch. Due to COVID restrictions and to reduce the number of adults we have in school, this invitation is strictly for 1 adult per child only. We’re pleased to be able to continue with these events this year (unlike last year), so thank you for your understanding regarding the need to limit our numbers.

Year R Christmas Performance – Thursday 9th December 2021 at 2:45pm

Year 1 Christmas Performance – Tuesday 14th December 2021 at 2:30pm

Year 2 Christmas Performance – Wednesday 15th December 2021 at 2:00pm

A letter with a ticket attached will be sent home early next week – please read carefully the COVID guidelines in place. Please keep this safe, as there will be no entry without a ticket.

Christmas Jumper Day: Our school community are supporting ‘Save The Children, Christmas Jumper Day 2021’. It will be held on Friday 10th December and this will also be the day we have our school Christmas Dinner. We are inviting the children to not only wear their Christmas jumpers, but to be in non-uniform that day too (as ‘Christmassy’ as possible please!). Please donate £2 per pupil to go to Save the Children. We would like donations to be made online via just giving at: Our Christmas Jumper Day (savethechildren.org.uk)
Together we can make sure that children everywhere get the food they need, to laugh, play and see wonder in the world.

TCS Christmas Lunch: This will be taking place on Friday 10th December.

As usual, this dinner is free for children in KS1 and is a cost of £2.20 for children in KS2.

Please send in the cash in a named and labelled envelope, ideally before Wednesday 8th December. Alternatively, ensure parent mail is topped up ready for this day.

Change of Menu: Due to Christmas dinner on Friday next week, Fish and Chips will be served on Wednesday 8th December.

TSA Christmas Hampers & Raffle: Thank you to those of you who have sent in donations for the TSA Christmas hampers. There is still time to donate, please place items in the green boxes at the school gates this afternoon or on Monday 6th December. Raffle tickets have also been distributed in classes, the last day to purchase tickets is Friday 10th December by 3:15pm. The raffle will be drawn on Monday 13th December, you have to be in it to win it!

Messages via the school office: The school office staff are receiving a lot of last minute phone calls about changes to adults picking up children at home time.  It is difficult to get messages to teachers in the day during lesson times and not ideal for lessons to be interrupted.  We do understand that sometimes changes to children’s collection arrangements are beyond your control, therefore we are happy to accommodate these as a one-off emergency. Ideally, we prefer you to sort out going home arrangements with your child, in the morning, prior to the start of school. However, if you do need to get a message to the class teacher please email the office at office@tunbury.kent.sch.uk so that we can help.

Team Points: The points for this week are as follows. It’s been an exciting race this term – now, Attenborough are in the lead for the first time! Two weeks to go – who will finish the term on top?

School photos: The school photographs have now been emailed to parents direct from Tempest. The email will be from: no-reply@tempest-orders.co.uk.  If you have not received your emailed photograph order details, please check on your 'junk' email account. Orders can be placed through the Tempest website using your unique link or visit www.tempest-orders.co.uk . The closing date for free delivery back to school is at 11.59 pm on the evening of Sunday 5th December 21.
If you need any assistance in ordering your photos, feel free to contact Tempest on 01736 751555 (option 3).

Tempest Photographers will be in school again on Monday 6th December to take photos of Year 6 pupils absent on the photograph days. If your child was absent in other year groups and you would like an individual/sibling photo of your child/ren please email the school office.

Change to Term/Holiday Dates: In acknowledgement of the additional Bank Holiday for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, the DfE have reduced the minimum number of sessions that schools are required to meet in the academic year 2021/2022. As a result, following a consultation, KCC have taken the decision to end the Summer term in 2022 a day early so that term finishes on Thursday 21 July 2022 instead of Friday 22 July 2022.

Poppy appeal thank you: Together we raised £716.46 from your donations for the British Legion Poppy appeal. To find out more about how your donation help visit www.rbl.org.uk

New Tunbury art murals: Our artist Andy has just completed our magnificent ‘Into the Big Blue’ mural next to our Year 1 and 2 classrooms.  It looks fantastic, like stepping into an aquarium!  You can see a video of this mural at How to paint an under the sea mural - YouTube

This follows his ‘Space’ mural outside our Year 5 classrooms, completed earlier this term, which you can see at How to paint a Spaceman Mural - YouTube

All of our children (and staff) really enjoyed watching and contributing to the development of our new artworks.  A huge thanks to Andy for his work – we’ll be working with him again later on this school year on another communal art project, to which all of our children will contribute.

Covid-19: Please stay alert to possible Covid symptoms, get a test promptly if you or your child experience symptoms and follow all NHS guidance.  School staff are taking twice weekly Covid tests and we would encourage other adults and secondary school pupils in our community to do the same.

If you have Covid cases in your household, our local Health Protection Team’s advice is for all other members of the household (including other children who are still attending school) to take a daily lateral flow test so that any transmission of Covid is detected as soon as possible.

Please continue to follow the current Covid guidance – you can check this at www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/
