Headteacher’s message to parents/carers
Dear Parents/Carers,
It was National Poetry Day yesterday – always a great reason to share some poetry. In assembly we read this poem: Word Play - Forward Arts Foundation and then chose our favourite verses. Lots of children thought the verse about seaweed was funny, and they also liked the visual imagery created by the verses on the worried cat, football made out of feet and the rolling sausage roll. Whilst you (ie our lovely parents and carers) might be far too grown up to giggle at seaweed, here is another National Poety Day poem for you to ponder:
Rules for a Good Walk by Lucinda Jacob
come out with me
walk at my pace
talk to me
let me pet the big wet dog
put your phone away
kick up the leaves
and run with me
let me slow down and splash
in the shiny puddle
put your phone away
look at the stone I bring you
show me the beetle under your stone
put your phone away
write my name in the mud with a stick
let me get muddy
let me throw my hat off
put your phone away
put your phone away
Rules for a Good Walk - Forward Arts Foundation
This poem made me smile, partly because as a parent of three teenagers, I know how important it is for them (and us) to ‘put your phone away’ sometimes!
This week in school, we’ve enjoyed our very first theme day of the year, with Year 4 Roman Day on Monday. In my favourite moment of the week, I was amazed by the artwork in Lilac class, with children making fabulous Roman statues out of a ball of clay in just over 30 minutes! Amazing. Children also made Roman mosaics and had a visitor from Maidstone museum who told them all about Roman life, with some real Roman artefacts. Events like this really bring learning to life for our children and are so memorable. Thank you for your support with the brilliant Roman outfits which children wore and please do take a look at Facebook for some photos of the day.
Have a lovely weekend everyone – maybe enjoy a family Autumn walk?
Best wishes
Ruth Austin
