Weekly Bulletin: Friday 4th November 2022

Headteacher’s message to parents/carers

Dear Parents/Carers,

Welcome back to the start of Term 2.  It’s already been a busy week in school, with new topics in every year group, parent consultations (including by torchlight, due to a inconveniently timed power cut), a school trip for Year 2, Bikeability for Year 6 … and we’re also looking forward to Fireworks on Sunday!

Our Year 2 trip to Kent Life on Wednesday was a great success.  Due to Covid disruption, this was the very first experience of a school trip for children in this year group.  They were excited to meet Samuel Pepys (yes, the real Samuel Pepys) to learn all about the Great Fire of London and write their own diaries with a quill and ink.  They also enjoyed the nature trail, tractor ride, play area, owls, meerkats and alpacas.  A huge thank you to the staff and parents/carers who supported children on the trip.  Every year group will have a trip booked for this year to support their learning, so we look forward to many more positive experiences to come.

We all know that school attendance is important for our children’s friendships, academic attainment and wellbeing.  At parent consultations, we will share your child’s current attendance record, showing their percentage attainment as well as any ‘late’ marks.  This will enable us to discuss the importance of good attendance with you and help us to work together to secure better attendance and punctuality (if this is needed).  We do understand that there are occasions when children cannot attend school due to illness, but we are also aware of other occasions when children should not actually be absent from school.  Our class-by-class attendance figures for Term 1 are as follows.  Congratulations to Ruby, Sapphire and Lavender classes for being our top attenders, all over 97% – fabulous!

Term 1 Attendance

Have a lovely weekend everyone.  Please take care of yourselves and your families - stay safe over Bonfire Night and Fireworks events.  If you are joining us for the TSA Fireworks Spectacular here on Sunday, we look forward to seeing you!

Best wishes

Ruth Austin

Our Learning: Year R

This term is entitled ‘Let’s celebrate!’ We will be looking at how different people across the world celebrate special events.

Our term started by talking about why we have Bonfire Night and what special celebrations we have in our own homes.

We have also started to talk about the festival of Diwali. Children have looked at different artefacts and have begun to understand why they are important.

We have heard the story about Rama and Sita and have made our own puppets to act out the story. We have looked at and created Mehndi patterns and Rangoli patterns. We will also be making our own Diva lamps.

We are continuing to work hard in our phonics lessons where we are learning to read and write new letters. We have been doing lots of activities to help improve our letter formation and pencil grip.

We have been doing ‘Drawing club’ where children have a stimulus, for example a story, and draw pictures related to different types of questions. They are encouraged to talk about their drawings, add special codes and key letters/ words. The children find drawing club very exciting and have even had a chance to use an app to make their pictures talk.

This week we have been looking at the book ‘What’s in the witches kitchen?’. The children have created all sorts of things for the witch to put into her fridge.

Admissions for children starting school in September 2023 are now open: Applications for a primary school place should be made via your ‘home’ local authority.

At Tunbury, we held our first New Entrants meeting this week and have four more meetings planned:

Remembrance Day: This falls on Sunday 13th November 2021. It is a national opportunity to remember the service and sacrifice of all those that have defended our freedoms and protected our way of life. To mark Remembrance Day our School Councillors will be selling poppies in school next week during lunchtimes.

Data Collection Sheets: This document has been handed out via class teachers at parent consultations (printed on green coloured paper).  It is vital that we have correct phone numbers and e-mail addresses if we are to communicate with you effectively.  When you are satisfied that the information on the Data Collection sheet is correct, please sign and date the form and return to your child’s class teacher or to the school office. Please sign and return the form even if there are no alterations to be made. Please return by Friday 18th November 2022.  Thank you for your help with this matter.

After school clubs: Reminder – due to parent consultations, there will be no clubs for the first 2 weeks of this term. Clubs will start again on week starting 14th November 2022.

Topic newsletters: In order to keep you informed about your child’s learning the topic newsletters for each year group will be emailed to parents today. These are also published on our website at Tunbury Primary School - Year groups

Individual/Sibling group Photos: On Tuesday 22nd/Wednesday 23rd November Tempest photographers will be visiting school to take individual/sibling group photos (in-school children).  All children will have an individual photo taken, unless you tell us otherwise.  Tempest will also be able to take photos of sibling groups of in-school children. However, if you do not require a sibling group photo, please send an email to the school office.

Team Points: In our first totals for the new term, we have Hawking team in an early lead.
