Headteacher’s message

Dear Parents/Carers,

It’s been such a pleasure to welcome our children back to school this week. So many smiling faces, happy to be back with their friends and in their classrooms! Our focus this week has been on children’s well-being, with a strong focus on mental health and teambuilding within their class groups. To help with this, all children in Years 1-6 have been working on a PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education) project using the book ‘The Dot’ by Peter H Reynolds. We hope that this has helped children to feel settled and happy back at school, with their new class teachers, ready for the learning journey ahead.

We would also like to extend a very special welcome to our new Reception children. These children and parents have managed to cope with the extraordinary challenge of starting a brand new school without any previous visits or in-school transition events. Despite this, everyone has made a good start and we look forward to getting to know you all better, as part of our Tunbury school community.

Finally, thank you everyone for your patience and support as we all adapt to our new entry and exit routines. Although these are becoming more smooth, we will continue to monitor the situation at all three gates throughout next week.

Have a lovely weekend everyone.

 Best wishes

Ruth Austin

Notices

Covid-19 symptoms: It is vitally important that nobody with symptoms of Covid-19 should approach or enter the school site. Please be aware of the following government advice:

If you have any of the main symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19), get a test as soon as possible. Stay at home until you get the result.

The main symptoms of coronavirus are:

  • a high temperature – this means you feel hot to touch on your chest or back (you do not need to measure your temperature)
  • a new, continuous cough – this means coughing a lot for more than an hour, or 3 or more coughing episodes in 24 hours (if you usually have a cough, it may be worse than usual)
  • a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste – this means you've noticed you cannot smell or taste anything, or things smell or taste different to normal

Most people with coronavirus have at least 1 of these symptoms.

Entry/Exit routines:

  • Please be on time (not early or late!) for your ten minute time-slot. In the mornings, children can enter at any time in the 10 minute window – often, the second half of each window is very quiet.
  • Please remember that staff at the gate (including class teachers) cannot take messages from you – please send any messages via the school office.
  • Please remember to give your child all their belongings (eg water bottle) when they leave you at the gate.
  • Please do not smoke while waiting outside school in the vicinity of other parents or children.
  • Our PCSO has already visited the school site during drop-off time and will be returning to monitor the situation (including parking and road safety) over the coming weeks.
  • Once you have dropped off or collected your child, please move away from the gates.

PE: Starting next week, PE lessons will resume as normal, but children will come into school on their PE day already dressed in their PE kit. The PE day for each year group is as follows:

Monday: Year 5

Tuesday: Year R and Year 3 (see note below about Year R for next week)

Wednesday: Year 2 and Year 6

Thursday: Year 1 and Year 4

As children are wearing their PE kits all day on their PE day, there is no need to send children into school with a PE bag or kit – these will now remain at home.

UPDATE: Year R will start full PE lessons on Tuesday 15th September. Next week children should come into school in normal uniform and they will get to meet their PE coach and find out all about PE.

New Reception Year

Well done to all of our new Reception Year children!  They have come into school for the first time beautifully and are fully immersing themselves into their classes.  I have been particularly impressed by the number of children I see coming out of class talking away to their adult about what they have been up to that morning.

Just a reminder for Year R parents/carers that next week’s drop-off and pick-up times and routines are as follows:

Year R Parent/Carer Meetings

We explained during the new entrants meeting that we would offer meetings during the first weeks of your child starting school.  Teachers will be making calls from 1:30pm on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of next week.  Please can you ensure you have activated your Tapestry account and message the class teacher to request a call if you would like to chat about their first few days in school – please specify which day you would like to be called on.
