Headteacher’s message to parents/carers

Dear Parents/Carers,

What a brilliant Sports Day we had last week!  Thank you for coming along – it certainly felt like we had great support from the Tunbury school community, with a really positive atmosphere throughout the whole day and some not-too-hot-but-not-too-cold weather.  Hawking team lifted the trophy in KS2 and Attenborough emerged victorious in KS1, but all of our children were winners with their magnificent participation and Team Tunbury teamwork.  I’d just like to give a special mention to our Year 6 Team Captains, who carried their flags and led their teams throughout the day, so a huge well done to Milly, Riley, Holly, Freya, Kirsten, Chloe, Lucy and Aaron!

Today, children in our current YR to Y5 classes had their first transition event with their new class teachers, who came into their current classrooms to meet them ‘officially’ for the first time and read them a story.  Our aim is that these experiences help children to feel more settled with their new teachers, ready for the start of next academic year – exciting times!

Looking further ahead, there are a couple of other updates for you to be aware of.

Firstly, children’s annual reports – these will be with you next Friday (12th July).  The new news here is that we are finally saying goodbye to the traditional paper envelope and printed report.  Instead of paper copies, both parents of each child will be sent an email on Friday 12th July, which will contain a link to download a PDF version of the report.  If you have any queries following receipt of your child's report, please speak to your child's class teacher in the first instance. To help this new system run smoothly, please make sure that we have the correct email address for you, before Friday. If you would like to provide an updated email address, please send this in to office@tunbury.kent.sch.uk

Secondly, ‘Meet the Teacher’ meetings – in our 2024 parent/carer survey, we asked whether you would prefer us to hold these meetings in July or September.  Tunbury said: 51% for July, 15% for September and 34% don’t mind.  As a result, we have planned our Meet the Teacher sessions for July and the dates are in the Diary Dates section.  The presentations will also be shared on our website, so that you’re aware of the key information even if you cannot attend in person.

In addition to this, please remember that next Wednesday (10th July) is our whole-school transition day, with all classes moving up to their new teachers.  Children will start and finish the day in their normal classes, but then move up within school time.  Dismissal is in the normal places from children’s current classrooms/locations.  After this, we’ll have our ‘Open Classroom’ session from 3.15-3.45 for you to pop into your child’s new classroom, where they will have spent the day.  This year, we don’t have many staff changes so there are no new staff to meet, but please do come in and say hello to the teachers and teaching assistants who will be supporting your child.  We know that children at Tunbury are lucky to benefit from strong home/school partnerships, and this starts with good communication and trust between parents/carers and school staff.  Thank you so much for your ongoing support.

Have a lovely weekend everyone.

Best wishes

Ruth Austin

Cricket Tournament

On Thursday 27th June, 10 Year 6 children attended the cricket Mini Youth Games tournament at High Halstow Cricket Club with Mrs Stallard and Mr Whybrow.  In total, the team competed in 6 games of cricket.  They won 3 of their 6 matches, and suffered only very narrow losses in the others, resulting in a placing of 13th out of 25 teams.  Every single player was a wonderful ambassador for our school, representing our values at all times.  They showed great sportsmanship towards their opponents and supported and encouraged each other.  We are incredibly proud of them all.

Well done to: Amy, Sofia, Sidnee, Olly, Harry T, Harry L, Fraser, Thomas, Logan and Ali!

Our Learning: Year 4

In Year 4 we are reading The Animals of Farthing Wood and basing our writing on the characters.  The children drew a picture of their favourite character and used this as a stimulus to write a character description using a range of descriptive language.   The children then produced another piece of descriptive writing, describing a setting. This week, the children are using both of these pieces of descriptive language to feed into writing their own chapter for the book.

In maths we have been learning time, converting to and from the 24-hour clock. We have also learnt about the properties of various shapes, such as quadrilaterals and polygons. Can your child name more than 4 quadrilaterals?

In Art we have been studying architecture, looking at different styles of architecture from traditional buildings like St Paul’s Cathedral designed by Christopher Wren and more modern structures like those designed by Antonio Gaudi, Frank Gehry and Zaha Hadid.   On our open afternoon, the children sketched the school buildings, making sure the scale was correct by using a pencil to measure the buildings, a very useful technique!

In Topic we are answering the question, Why should people visit Medway? To help us answer that question we have been looking at how Medway has changed over the years and created fact files about Chatham Dockyard and the River Medway.  Hopefully, our trip to Rochester next week will give the children even more reasons for visiting Medway.

After School Clubs: Please be reminded, as detailed in the clubs letter sent out in April, next week is the last week of our after school clubs. There will be no after school clubs during weeks starting 15th and 22nd July.

Class Group Photographs: The recent Class Group photograph can now be viewed and purchased via the link emailed to parents last week. There will be a free “deliver to school” option open until Tuesday 9th July 2024, otherwise home delivery is available for £5 postage and packing. If you need assistance or have any questions regarding placing an order, please call 01736 751555 (option 3) or click on the “contact” button on Tempest’s website home page (htempest.co.uk) where their friendly team will be happy to help.

Diversity Week: From Monday 15th July to Friday 19th July, our Diversity Ambassadors would like everyone to experience the customs and traditions of different cultures.  What better way to immerse the children in this than to learn about the cultures within our Tunbury community?  Therefore, we are asking if there are any parents/ carers or family members who would be willing to share their cultural customs and traditions with classes or year groups within the school.  Please contact the school office if you are able to help: office@tunbury.kent.sch.uk

School office opening times: Just a reminder that our standard opening hours for the office are 8.30am-4.00pm Mondays to Thursdays and 8.30am-3.30pm on Fridays.  After these hours, you are able to send emails or leave phone messages, but these will not be picked up by our office staff until the following working day.

TSA Circus: The circus is coming to Tunbury Primary School on Saturday 20th July! We have the amazing professional circus company Circus Pizaz joining us this year for our summer circus! There are 3 show times to choose from and tickets are £6.50.

It's going to be a fantastic event so we hope you can join us! Book your tickets to the circus now at:

If you don't want to come and watch the circus show, there is still lots of fun to be had as there will be hot/cold drinks, hot food, sweet treats, cakes, crazy golf, glitter/face paint, giant inflatable slide, a fun fair ride, games, craft stalls, henna, bungee trampolines and a bar! (General entry is free or by donation and you do not need to book tickets if you are not coming to watch the circus show).

School dinner payments: Please continue to pay for school lunches in cash or cheques payable to TCS Education Catering Ltd. This can be sent to school in a sealed, named envelope via the school office.  We have been working with TCS to help them set up a new online payment system, which we are hoping to have operational from September. Thank you for your patience and support with this we know that cash/cheque payments have not been ideal.

Weekly Class Attendance: This is a weekly feature on our bulletin to highlight and celebrate good levels of attendance. A huge well done to Hedgehogs, our KS1 winners, for reaching 100% attendance this week!! Our KS2 winners are Sapphire with an amazing 98.15%. Keep up the good work!
