Headteacher’s message to parents/carers

Dear Parents/Carers,

Wow!  What amazing outfits we have throughout Team Tunbury for today’s Number Day.  Thank you for helping your children get into the Number Day spirit.  I love the homemade outfits, especially where children have created their own t-shirt, hat or special costume – some of my favourites are calculators, dice, playing cards, 100 square or Numberblocks!  As well as this, we have lots of football/sports shirts, numbered hoodies and the dreaded 6-7 making the occasional appearance.

To celebrate Number Day, children are having fun Maths activities today and also taking part in challenges on Numberbots (for Years R-2) and TTRS (for Years 3-6).  On TTRS, Tunbury is taking part in the nationwide NSPCC Rocks competition, which runs from 7.30am today to 7.30pm, so there’s still time after school for children to log on and earn some extra points for our school!  Details at NSPCC Rocks - Times Tables Rock Stars

We are raising money for the NSPCC for Number Day, so please do give £2 per child, if you are able to.  The link for donations is justgiving.com/page/tpsnspccnumberday and our current total (at the time of writing) is £198, just over half way to our target of £350.  Thank you for your support.

Our Year R children have had two special days in a row, as yesterday was their Pyjama Storytelling day to end their topic on Traditional Tales.  Children and staff came into school dressed in their pyjamas, with parents/carers invited to join us at the end of the day.  When I spoke to three very excited children from Bears class to find out all about it, they said:

  •  “We wore our pyjamas going into school and coming out! I wanted to wear the ones I wore overnight but I didn’t.”
  •  “My nanny brought me an Irish book. It had loads of pages in it!”
  •  “I got to read with my mummy and daddy. We read The Three Little Pigs.”

Children really love special schools days or dressing up.  They’re so memorable!  Next term, we have World Book Day to look forward to.  Please take a look in the notices section for more information on this one.

Have a lovely weekend everyone.  We look forward to seeing you for parents’ evenings on Tuesday and Thursday next week (reminder, please do book your appointment if you haven’t already done so).

Best wishes

Ruth Austin

Today is Number Day. We are having a fun day of maths activities in school and to support NSPCC, we are asking for a voluntary donation of £2 which can be made using the link below: justgiving.com/page/tpsnspccnumberday

Parents’ Consultation Evenings: Parents’ Evenings are next week, on Tuesday 10th February and Thursday 12th February.  Please book a meeting with your child’s class teacher using the details in the letter which was emailed to parents last week.  Remember that we always offer a choice of in-person or online appointments, so if you can’t make it into school (eg due to your own work location/schedules) we can still meet with you online.  Appointments with our SENCO, Mrs Abdullah are also available on these days. If you did not receive or cannot find your Parents’ Evening letter, please email us at office@tunbury.kent.sch.uk so that we can help you.

World Book Day: We are excited to let you know that we will be celebrating World Book Day on Thursday 5th March 2026.  This year, we are inviting all children to come to school dressed in costume inspired by a word. The word can be anything your child loves or finds interesting – for example, happystormysparklebrave, or gigantic. Costumes can be as simple or as creative as you like, and there is absolutely no expectation to buy anything new.  The aim of the day is to celebrate language, imagination, and a love of reading, while keeping the focus on creativity rather than expense. We would love children to be able to explain their chosen word and how their costume represents it.  Please ensure that costumes are suitable for a normal school day and allow children to move comfortably and safely.  Thank you for your continued support. We are really looking forward to seeing the children’s fantastic ideas and celebrating World Book Day together.

After School Clubs: As advised in the original clubs letter sent out to parents After School Clubs will not be running next week, the last week of this term, week beginning Monday 9th February, due to parent consultation evenings.

Poles Apart Day for Year 5: This will be on Friday 13th February. The children are welcome to dress up but it is not compulsory. We will be completing various activities in our classes to finish our topic about the Arctic and the Antarctic.

Fidget toys: We have seen an increase in the number of children bringing in fidget toys from home that are more like toys or are quite noisy and distracting for the others in class. Please may we remind children and parents that only fidget toys approved by school can be used in class.

Tri Club: MedwayTri’s successful junior cycling coaching is open to new members. Make sure your child is signed up! To register your child today please contact nigel@medwaytri.com
