Headteacher’s message to parents/carers

Dear Parents/Carers,

Welcome back to the new school term and Happy New Year!  We hope that all of our Tunbury families had a lovely Christmas break.  Tunbury school staff were delighted to welcome our children back into school on Wednesday, ready for the new term.

With new topics starting in each year group, Tunbury children are already immersed in their new learning.  On the first day of term, I visited every class to welcome them back to school and it was fabulous to see their high level of engagement in their lessons.  In Year 6, all children enjoyed their World War II day, with visitors showing them what life would have been like for children back in this period of history.  I joined Emerald class who were being instructed by a rather strict Air Raid Warden, showing them how to keep safe and how to conduct a gas mask drill, and then dropped into Crimson class who were learning about food rationing and ration books.  In Year 2, children were starting their Land Ahoy pirate topic with a special day.  I visited Pink class where children were creating model pirate ships and seeing if they would float, then went into Orange class where they were learning about pirate food and making their very own hardtack biscuits from flour, water and salt.  These were described to me as “fearsomely durable”, although not exactly delicious!  A huge thank you to our talented Tunbury teachers who really do go above and beyond to make learning fun and accessible for all of our children.

For more information about your child’s learning, this term’s Topic Newsletters have been emailed to all year groups today and can also be found on the year group pages of our school website.  Thank you for all the support you offer with children’s learning at home – we really do appreciate this.  Although I know you have heard this from me many times before, please remember that reading is our first priority for home support.  We ask all of our parents and carers to support reading, so please do hear your child read, share books with them at home and encourage them to develop a love of reading which will help them to ‘fly’ through their education.  Reading gives you wings!

Have a lovely weekend everyone.

Best wishes

SEN Update

I hope you all had an enjoyable Christmas break even if it may seem like a distant memory now.

I wanted to thank you all for the support and kindness you have shown me over the last two terms whilst I have not been at Tunbury full-time.  I am pleased to now be in school 5 days a week.

If your child has a Personalised Plan, these have now all had their first review of the year and you should have received a copy of this and/ or spoken to your child's class teacher depending on your preference.  If there are further questions you have about the support your child is receiving in school, please do not hesitate to contact your child's class teacher in the first instance or the Phase Leader or myself if necessary.  The Personalised Plans will next be reviewed in March (before the Easter holidays). If your child's support needs to be reviewed before then, we will be in touch to arrange a date and time.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very Happy New Year and look forward to getting to know more of you over the coming weeks and months.

Best wishes

Stephanie Davies, SENCO

Admissions for children starting school in September 2023: If you haven’t already applied for your school place, please do so now, as the deadlines are next weekend.  Applications for a primary school place should be made via your ‘home’ local authority.

We have arranged one final New Entrants meeting and tour for any parents/carers who may have missed our earlier events. This will be at 2pm on Monday 9th January.  To book onto this session, please contact the school office on office@tunbury.kent.sch.uk

Please contact us at school if you cannot make this date, would like to re-visit the school or have any further questions.  We would be happy to help.

Staffing news: A warm Tunbury welcome for our new members of staff, Mrs Marksford (Scarlet class teacher), Miss Martin (Teaching Assistant) and Miss Stephens (Midday Meals Supervisor), who have joined us this week.  Welcome to our team – our children are looking forward to working with you all.

Attainment updates: Attainment updates are coming home today – children will have an envelope to give to you containing attainment information from the end of Term 2.  We provide you with this regular information on children’s attainment so that you can understand and support their progress throughout the year, as part of our commitment to strong home/school partnerships.  If you have any questions or concerns about your child’s learning, please discuss this with their class teacher.

Young Carers: 800,000 Young Carers aged 5-18 care for an adult or family member in the UK.  The definition of a Young Carer is 'anyone aged 5-18 who is impacted by a health need (physical or mental) in their home eg siblings with learning needs, family member/s with substance misuse issues, grandparents requiring care living in the home.'  It is especially important to acknowledge the inclusion of children who live with siblings with additional or special educational needs in this definition.  If your child or children fall into this group, please email the school, office@tunbury.kent.sch.uk to discuss how we can best support these amazing young people or if you have any questions about the support we can offer.
Mrs Kidd, Learning Mentor

After-school clubs: We are currently planning our program of after-school clubs for the new term and will send an update next week.

If you would like to book a space, please email office@tunbury.kent.sch.uk with your name, child’s name and class, the name of the course you would like to attend and the number of adults attending with each child. Places will be filled on a first come, first served basis. Please only request one course per child. Thank you.
