Headteacher’s message to parents/carers
Dear Parents/Carers,
World Book Day is one of the highlights of our year, and a joyous celebration of reading and fun. I love to approach the school gates in the morning and see a sea of creativity and smiles! This year, our ‘dress as a word’ outfits ranged from darkness (bloodcurdling, radioactive and contagious) to sweetness (fairy, cosy, perfect) and everything in between. We also spanned all the colours of the rainbow, as shown by the Year 2 Tunbury staff team:
Our staff rose to the occasion in carrying on with their ‘normal’ work too. Imagine teaching arithmetic to a boy dressed as a banana, or listening to a reader and trying to hear them through their motorcycle helmet and mask, it all goes on here! Please take a look at our Facebook page for some more fabulous Team Tunbury World Book Day outfits from our children. Thank you for helping children get into the World Book Day spirit.
Thank you for joining us for our Book Week Open Afternoons this week. Reception up to Year 4 have already taken place, with Year 5 and 6 this afternoon from 2.00-3.00. We always love to work with parents/carers, but even more so when it comes to reading! This is because we can see the difference which home parental support makes to our children’s success in reading. And following on from this, we can see the difference which reading skills make to children’s success at both primary and secondary school.
So, why not be Book Week inspired and take the opportunity this weekend to read with your child? Perhaps follow in the footsteps of one of our favourite book characters (Matilda by Roald Dahl) and see where a book could take you…. “What I really like is reading. It’s like a holiday for your head.” What kind of holiday would your child like? Into space, back in time, or to a magical land?
Or, how about finding some books that you read yourself when you were at school, and then reading them with your child? Perhaps dig out your set of Beast Quest, Mr Men, Harry Potter, Series of Unfortunate Events or Mallory Towers and start reading aloud. Then keep reading until your child can see what you loved about them!
Just a reminder - our Book Fair is now open in the hall after school. We were very busy yesterday so please drop in today, Monday or Tuesday after school to pick some new books for your children to read.
Have a lovely weekend everyone.
Best wishes
Ruth Austin

Travelling Book Fair – The book fair will be in school until Tuesday 10th March. The children have been able to visit the book fair in their classes during school time. The World Book Day £1 voucher can be used at the book fair to receive a £1 discount on any book.
Paying for books at the fair has changed slightly this year. All payments will need to be made online. Payments can be made by scanning the QR code on the Payment Guide which will be displayed at the fair or at travellingbooks.co.uk/pay and searching for the school using our postcode ME5 9HY. Unfortunately, Travelling Books do not allow us to take payments via Apple Pay or similar methods – you will need to have your bank card details with you.

Girls football: On Friday 13th March, we are holding our annual Let Girls Play football session to mark International Women's Day. Girls in any year group are invited to play football at lunchtime next Friday. No experience or kit necessary, it is just an opportunity for girls to have a chance to join in with a fun football session! We will let the children know the timings and arrangements in assembly next week.
World Down Syndrome Day: This year we are going to be raising awareness within our school community about Down Syndrome by taking part in some activities and dressing up on Friday 20th March. More details about this will follow in next week’s bulletin.
Vehicles on the school site: Please be advised that parents/carers are not permitted to drive their vehicles on to the school site, other than in an emergency situation. If you need to drop/collect your child or visit the school office at any time of the day, please park outside the school and enter the school via the front pedestrian gate.
Weekly Class Attendance: This is a weekly feature on our bulletin to highlight and celebrate good levels of attendance. This week we have two classes who have managed to get 100% attendance. For the second week running, our KS2 winners are Sapphire Class. Fantastic work from Sapphire Class! Our KS1 winners are Lavender class with another brilliant 100%. Keep up the great work everyone!
