Weekly Bulletin: Friday 6th October 2023

Headteacher’s message to parents/carers

Dear Parents/Carers,

Tunbury Thank You Day: today, we have been combining two important events into one big ‘Thank You’ day!  To celebrate both World Teachers’ Day (Thursday 5th Oct) and National Teaching Assistants’ Day (Friday 29th Oct), we have been saying a huge, amazing and heart-felt thank you to our wonderful staff team.  As part of this, all of our children have been making and giving cards to their teachers and TAs today, to say thank you for the brilliant job that they do.  Tunbury staff work incredibly hard and are totally dedicated to children’s welfare and education, meaning that they often go ‘above and beyond’ the expectations of their roles to make sure that our children are happy, safe and successful.

Thank you to our parents who stood for election to become our new Parent Governors.  We are very grateful to them all for volunteering for this important role, showing their commitment to our school community.  At the close of our ballot yesterday, the successful candidates were Hayley Moylan and Elizabeth Pole.  Congratulations to you both -  we look forward to working with you on the Governing Body.

Next week, we will be celebrating Harvest, by exploring the season of Autumn.  We will be giving thanks for the things we have in our lives and thinking about how we can support others who may be less fortunate.  With this in mind, we are asking children to come into school next week with donations of unused, non-perishable goods.  These goods will be part of our harvest display for the week and then will be donated to a local foodbank.  Donations can be handed to class teachers on any day from Monday 9th – Friday 13th October.  Thank you for your support.

Have a lovely weekend everyone.

Best wishes,

Ruth Austin

Black History Month

Over the month of October, Year 1 – 6 will be taking part in mini projects, researching and exploring key black people from our local area and further afield.  These individuals have been identified alongside members of staff and parents.  At the end of the term, each year group will present their findings in an assembly, whilst also showing off the portrait of that individual the year group has produced.  All learning from this month will be shared on a new display board in school.

Significant individuals we are learning about include:

Kelly Holmes

Malorie Blackman

Floella Benjamin

Chatham and William Cuffray

Mary Seacole

Sarah Forbes Benetta

As a school, it is so important to celebrate and learn about the diverse community we live in.  To enhance the already good practice we have in school, we have launched a new ‘Diversity Leaders’ group.  If your child is interested in promoting different cultures and backgrounds within and beyond our curriculum then please encourage them to apply for the role.  We would love to have as many different cultures and backgrounds in the team!  Application forms can be requested from your child’s class teacher.

Pupil Leadership

This week, we have been continuing to shortlist and interview a range of children for our subject ambassador vacancies. We had so many applications for some subjects we have made the decision to have a KS1 and KS2 representative. So far we have appointed the following:

History Subject Ambassador – Charlotte M (Sapphire)

Geography Subject Ambassador – Amy (Emerald)

Maths Subject Ambassadors – Joshua (Turquoise) and Sienna S (Lavender)

Other subject ambassadors will be interviewed soon, but application forms are also now open for our Librarian and ECO Champions vacancies. Application forms may be brought home by your child so please help them to complete it, or alternatively please request for a form from your child’s class teacher.
