Headteacher’s message to parents/carers

Dear Parents/Carers,

We all enjoyed yesterday’s Transition Day.  We were delighted to welcome our newest children for a visit to Reception and they coped so well with their first (half) day at school – the start of a great adventure!  Everyone else also moved up a year and spent the day with their new teachers, giving them a good understanding of what September will look and feel like.

Also this week, in the final of our three Phase Art Projects, Year 5 and 6 have been creating some stunning 3D artworks for the Tunbury Library.  We chose favourite book characters for this project, so as well as Stick Man, Gangsta Granny and Harry Potter (pictured), we also have the Gruffalo, Willy Wonka, Room on the Broom and Toothless.  Fabulous work, Year 5 and 6!  As with our other collaborative artworks, children should be able to tell you which part of which character they helped to create…

Looking back to last week, thank you for joining us for Sports Day last Friday.  Children had a brilliant day and it was great to see such enthusiasm, enjoyment and Top Tunbury Teamwork, as usual!

Finally, just a reminder that our ‘Meet the Team’ meetings for each year group start next week, for the year group your child will be in next year.  Following feedback, we have moved these to July from September, in order to help everyone be better prepared for the start of the new school year.  We look forward to seeing you.

Have a lovely weekend everyone.

Best wishes

Our Learning Year 5

This week, Year 5 have been learning some First Aid with 'Flat Stanley.'  They had great fun putting bandages on their partner.  They also learnt how to do CPR and how to help someone choking by slapping them on the back or doing the Heimlich manoeuvre.

On Thursday we saw the culmination of the Year 5 topic on Living things and their habitats, when Year 5 went out to the Glade at the end of the day and released their butterflies after observing them from small caterpillars.  As each one flew off on its own adventure, there was a spontaneous cheer and round of applause.  A great end to a great topic.

Mini Youth Games Athletics - 4th July: On Tuesday, we competed in the final Mini Youth Games of the school year, Athletics at Medway Park.  Eight Year 6 children represented the school exceptionally well, showing fantastic teamwork, enthusiasm and sportsmanship, cheering for all the other schools as well as their own teammates.  We competed in various jumping and throwing events as well as a mini marathon, sprints and relays.  Lyla and Michael did fantastically well in the mini marathon, finishing 6th and 10th respectively.  Both Toby and Jaycee finished 1st in their 100m heats, with Caspian and Evie finishing 2nd in their 60m heats.  Both 4x100m relay teams won their races, with Ruby expertly leading her team home with a fast final leg!  Griffin showed a great jumping technique with an expert performance in the long jump.  When all the points were added together, Tunbury finished 10th out of 32 schools, which we were very proud of! Many thanks Miss Hawkes and Miss Baker for leading our team on the day.

Safer Parking: The Safer Parking Wardens have begun their important job.  You'll be able to spot them in their hi-vis tabards mornings and afternoons. They are there to keep the area around our school safe, for both adults and children.  They will be able to offer advice on safer parking, in line with the current information in the Highway code.  Please support our wardens: give them a smile and park safely.

Diarrhoea and Vomiting illness: Unfortunately, we have had a number of children absent due to sickness this week. Please may we remind parents that as advised by the Health Protection Agency that children need to be kept away from school for 48 hours from the last episode of diarrhoea or vomiting.

Consultation on Behaviour Policy and Anti-Bullying Policy: Please read the email which we sent this morning regarding our annual review of our Behaviour Policy and Anti-Bullying Policy. Overall, our aim here is to improve understanding of how we manage behaviour at Tunbury, by making our systems simpler and easier to understand.  You can view all of the relevant information via these links, then get involved in sharing your views using the different routes outlined in this morning’s email.  Thank you.
