Headteacher’s message to parents/carers
Dear Parents/Carers,
What an amazing week we have had for this year’s Book Week! It’s been wonderful to share this with you through our Spring Term Open Afternoons. These reading-themed open events have been a great success for each year group, with just Year 5 and 6 left to have their turn this afternoon, from 2-3pm.
As well as this, Team Tunbury really embraced our new ‘dress as a word’ theme for World Book Day! What fabulous outfits – thank you so much for your contributions. Children and staff had lots of fun dressing up as a whole dictionary of words, with loads of original, thought-provoking and vocabulary-expanding words being shared. Some of my favourites were ‘fierce’, ‘indecisive’, ‘positive’, ‘ambivalent’, ‘recyclable’ and ‘inquisitive’. Some children asked me what my word was, but as it was ‘disguise’, I’m not sure they even recognised it was me! Thank you for sending in your brilliant World Book Day photos for our Facebook page – please take a look at Tunbury Primary School | Chatham | Facebook.
Children in every year group held a parade of World Book Day outfits, where our English Ambassadors Isabella and George chose winners for each year group, as follows:
- Reception - Arthur as Willy Wonka and word ‘scrumdiddlyumptious’
- Year 1 – Robin as ‘joy’
- Year 2 – Lottie as ‘hopeful’, dressed as Cindy Loo Loo
- Year 3 – Arella as ‘fragile’
- Year 4 – Tegan as ‘grammar’, dressed as MC Grammar
- Year 5 – Sienna as ‘wicked’ and Kai as a selection of words based on the character Toothless
- Year 6 – Ava and Georgia as ‘mischievous’
Great work everyone! We hope that you will all be inspired to enjoy reading, so please continue to support your children with a love of books and reading at home. Parents and carers, maybe you could dig out one of your favourite childhood books to read to your child this weekend?
Have a lovely weekend everyone.
Best wishes
Ruth Austin

Notices
Book Week Competitions – This is just a reminder about two competitions that have been running during Book Week this week.
Book Cover Design – Children can create an A4 poster of a book cover of their choice. This can either be a book that has already been published or it could be a design for a book that the children have made up themselves.
Writing Competition – During assembly last week, the picture book ‘The Wonder’ by Faye Hanson was shared and children can respond to this story in any writing genre they choose. For example, they may choose to write a recount/ diary entry, a poem or think about an imaginative description. You can find this story being read at this link: https://youtu.be/u0-makC-lO0?si=G7MOvt19jWsvFYQ9
Any entries for these competitions need to be given to Mrs Davies by Friday 14th March.
Travelling Book Fair – The book fair will be in school until Tuesday 11th March, straight after school from 3:15 pm until 3:45 pm. The children had the opportunity to visit the book fair in their classes on Thursday 6th March before it officially opened for purchasing books after school. The World Book Day £1 voucher, sent home last week, can be used at the book fair to receive a £1 discount on any book.
Paying for books at the fair has changed slightly this year. All payments will need to be made online. Payments can be made by scanning the QR code on the Payment Guide which will be displayed at the fair or at travellingbooks.co.uk/pay and searching for the school using our postcode ME5 9HY. You will need to bring your bank card with you as we are noticing that cards saved to your mobile phone’s wallet and apple pay won’t work.
Red Nose Day is fast approaching and will take place on Friday 21st March. This year is the 40th birthday for Comic Relief. School Council would like to invite all children to take part in Red Nose Day on Friday 21st March by swapping their school uniform on this day for a red themed outfit for a £1 donation. All donations will be made via our Just Giving page and the link for this will be sent out nearer the time.
School Council are also holding a joke competition. Children will perform in classes and class winners will have the opportunity to perform in assembly on Friday 21st March, with those who make our laughter panel laugh the most winning valuable team points for their Tunbury House.
School Meals: Unfortunately, due to the ever increasing food and labour cost, TCS have needed to increase the meal price to £2.80 with effect from April.
Online Safety: We’re sharing Online Safety information, using resources from the National College’s #WakeUpWednesday program. This week’s guide is on Using Technology to Boost Reading Skills. Please see the Parents > letters and forms section of our website.

Team Points: The first totals of the term are as follows – congratulations Rowling team, who are in the lead with over 1000 points already! In assembly today, children voted for the end of Term 4 Team Point reward, with ‘extra playtime on the field’ our winner with 75% of the votes. There is a long way to go, but will Rowling team be our eventual winners?
