Headteacher’s message to parents/carers

Dear Parents/Carers,

Today is National Poetry Day.  I love poetry because it’s such a powerful form of language…. often with bags of meaning packed into a small number of words!  Here is a wonderful poem which we read in assembly this morning:

Sun Kenning by James Carter

We thank you, Sun
for all you’ve done

You’re always such an . . .

early - riser
life - inspirer
moon - eclipser
summer - sizzler
winter - ender
lolly - melter
shadow - maker
dehydrator

B r i l l i a n t
that’s what you are -
we call you ‘sun’
but you’re a S T A R

Please try reading this with your children…… read it to them, and see where it can take you!  Can they tell you what each line means?  Would they enjoy reading it themselves?  How quickly can you read it?  How s  l  o  w  l  y can you read it?  Could you write their own?  This poem is from the National Poetry Day website at https://nationalpoetryday.co.uk/ where there are plenty of other powerful poems to read and enjoy.

Supporting your children with reading at home is so important, as we know that becoming a good reader is essential for primary school, secondary school and later employment.  We ask you to hear your child read at home five times a week.  Please enjoy reading and talk to your child about what they have read, so that you are exploring language together.  From the first days of learning phonics in Reception to the challenging books enjoyed by our Year 6 children, parental support for children’s journey through reading makes all the difference.  We know and appreciate just how committed Tunbury parents/carers are to our children’s education – thank you!

Have a lovely weekend everyone.

Best wishes

Ruth Austin

Our Learning: Year 4

In Year 4, we have been enjoying our topic of The Normans. We have begun our book called ‘I was there 1066: The Norman Conquest’. We are following the journey of a boy on his adventure to becoming a warrior during The Battle of Hastings. So far, we have taken on the role of Edwin to write a diary about his travels, we have written a character description based on Edwin and this week we will be writing a setting description about the Norman camp.

In Maths, we have been looking at Place Value. This encompasses a variety of topics such as finding 1, 100 or 1000 more or less of a number, roman numerals and rounding. We have been using number lines and place value counters to aid our learning. We have also loved the BBC Bitesize Quizzes! We are starting the topic of addition and subtraction this week, looking at using the column method and how to exchange when the vale goes over 10.

Our Science topic this term is ‘Investigations’. We have been using enquiry-based tasks to provide children with the opportunity to develop their scientific skills. We have posed questions and children have worked scientifically to test their ideas and understandings.

In History, we have been learning more about the Normans. We have looked at how the Norman period started with the different claimants to the throne and decided who we would vote for. We also looked at their motte and bailey castles and the role of knights in the battles. Next week we are going to find out more about the Battle of Hastings in 1066.

In R.E. we have discussed right and wrong and how religion can help people choose which path to take. We talked about temptation and linked it to the story of Adam and Eve. We also discussed Archbishop Desmond Tutu and how his religion shaped his life and his achievements.

In music, we have been learning to sing some ABBA classics such as Dancing Queen and Mamma Mia! We have been finding the pulse and beat to these songs and learning how a song is constructed.

In PHSE, we have been looking at relationships and how to stay safe online. We discussed what makes a positive friendship and what to do if you discover someone being unkind to you or your friends online.

In Computing, we have been learning about networks and devices and how they connect to the internet. We have also learnt the difference between the internet and the World Wide Web and the difference between a website and a webpage. We have looked at how websites are constructed and how we can add content to certain websites. Next, we are going to think about who owns online content and whether we can rely on what we read or see.
