Headteacher’s message to parents/carers

Dear parents/carers

What a brilliant day we had on Monday!  Thank you to everyone who was able to join us and support our children at Sports Day and family picnic.  It was a huge pleasure to see so many families here – my estimate was at least 1,200 members of Team Tunbury present at lunchtime.  Another post-Covid-disruption-back-to-normal moment!  Whilst this was welcome for all year groups, I was especially pleased that our Year 6 children and families were able to enjoy one more Sports Day for their last year in primary school.

In our Sports Day events, children participated with great enthusiasm, fantastic attitudes and excellent sportsmanship throughout the day.  We were so proud of their positivity and teamwork.  My favourite event was definitely the water race – simple but effective, and refreshing on a hot day!  Our final scores for Sports Day were as follows.

In KS2, congratulations Hawking team!

 In FS/KS1, congratulations Attenborough team!

Our parent/carer survey closes on Monday (11th July), so time is running out for you to share your views with us.  We have only received 93 responses so far, which is far fewer than the 216 responses we received last year.  Our survey can only be representative of the wider school community if more parents/carers get involved, so please spare us 10 minutes to share your views. For example…. next year, would you prefer online or face-to-face appointments at parent consultation evenings?  Please tell us!  Please visit the survey at www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/Tunburyparents2022

Thank you for your ongoing support for your children and our school.  Have a lovely weekend everyone.

Best wishes

Ruth Austin

Our Learning: Year 4

In maths, we have been looking at the properties of shape and lines of symmetry. We have been able to look around the classroom and school and find lots of different angles and discovered there are angles everywhere! We have been able to discover what makes something symmetrical and looking at which shapes have lines of symmetry.

In English, we have nearly finished out book ‘The Firework Makers Daughter’. We are following a girl on a journey to achieve her dream of becoming a firework maker. So far, we have taken on the role of Lila to write a letter and created our very own poem based on the Fire-Friends grotto. This week we have been able write our own set of instructions on how to make our own firework! We have had so much fun being able to describe and name our firework. In our instructions we have used rhetorical questions, imperative verbs and alliteration to make our writing exciting.

Our topic this term has been ‘Journeys’ and we have used this in science to look at the journey of sound. We have been looking at different instruments and how loud they are compared to others and identified which one would make the most effective fire alarm. In Topic we have looked the water cycle and started to look at evaporation and condensation. We had a lot of fun creating our own water cycle in zip lock bags and have seen them change by taping them to the windows.

We also enjoyed creating Mandalas and creating patterns in nature.

We have been enjoying our learning and looking forward to our transition days!

New SENCo September 2022

Stephanie Davies will be the new SENCo at Tunbury Primary School from September 2022.  Mrs Davies is an experienced SENCo and she has already been into school twice to have some hand over time with Miss Byrne.  She has also met several children on the SEND register and their parents already.

Message from new SENCo, Mrs Davies: “As you may be aware, I will be taking over the role of SENCO at Tunbury in September.  I am delighted to have been appointed to this role and I feel privileged to be joining such an inspiring and nurturing school community.  I have been a qualified teacher for 15 years and I have held SENCO positions for the last 7 years.  I am very much looking forward to building on the strong foundations already in place and working with Team Tunbury to support your children.”

Platinum Jubilee: We have now received Platinum Jubilee books for all children in Years 1-6 (Reception children will be receiving the last delivery when it arrives), which will be coming home today.  Queen Elizabeth: A Platinum Jubilee Celebration is a free gift being given to all UK primary school children as a commemoration of this special event.  We hope that Tunbury children will treasure this gift for years to come, with happy memories of the Platinum Jubilee.

TSA Summer Fair: Thank you to our TSA, volunteers, staff members and families who supported the TSA Summer Fair on Saturday afternoon.  It was a successful event with lots of fun for the whole family.  More details to follow on fundraising totals once these are available.

iRock and Musicians Concert:  on Thursday morning, our five iRock bands performed to parents and family members and this term we also had three children who have been learning pieces on the keyboard and a group who performed the song they have been learning with Mrs Hyde.  It was 45 minutes of pure joy, as we were entertained by them all!  It takes a lot of confidence to perform in front of others and every child did so well.  Thank you to iRock and Mrs Hyde for the teaching and rehearsals and to Mrs Bourner for organising the concert.  If your child is interested in learning an instrument or to sing, please see our website for more details: www.tunbury.kent.sch.uk/Music-Lessons/

Supporting Behaviour at Tunbury Primary School – a guide for parents: We have recently created a new page on our website called behaviour, located under the parents section. The purpose of the page is to help you to help us, making it clear what we expect and how we will address behaviour. We know that when the whole team around the child work together with good communication, it has the most effective impact on children’s behaviour.  The page clearly lays out what we believe about behaviour, our expectations, how we expect children to respond when something has gone wrong and how you as parents can help us. It also contains links to the behaviour policy, which contains more details on our approach, and the home school agreement two documents at the heart of our school behaviour approach.

Class Group Photos: The recent Class Group photographs are now ready to view and purchase. Photos can be ordered through the Tempest website using the link that was emailed to parents earlier in the week. Please be reminded that the closing date for free delivery back to school Is Tuesday 12th July. Otherwise home delivery is available for £5 postage and packing.
