Weekly Bulletin:Friday 9th February 2024
Headteacher’s message to parents/carers
This week, we have had more exciting enrichment events, this time for Year 5 and Year 6. Year 5 enjoyed their ‘Poles Apart’ day on Wednesday, where they made high-energy snacks suitable for Artic explorers and created some wonderful artwork and music. Year 6 enjoyed their World War II day yesterday, with a special visit from the author Helen Peters, who wrote our much-loved Year 6 text ‘Anna at War’. Thank you to our staff teams for the extra effort that goes into making days like these a big success.
Yesterday, we were delighted to welcome a “VIP” Tunbury visitor, Heather Brown, who was Headteacher at Tunbury Primary School for 20 years from 1992 to 2012. This was Mrs Brown’s first visit to Tunbury since she retired, so it was a great pleasure to meet her and show her around our school, where she commented on things that have changed, and other things that are just the same! For example, the school building has been developed and improved over time … but our Tunbury children are still as polite, hardworking and positive as ever. Mrs Brown also told me about some of the features of her time at Tunbury, such as the annual Tunbury Bike Week, orienteering club and the Tunbury staff choir – food for thought!
Have a lovely half term break everyone. Remember that Monday 19th Feb is an INSET day, so we look forward to seeing children back in school on Tuesday 20th.
Our Learning Year 2
This term in Year 2, we have been enjoying our learning about Pirates. This week we have started finding out about Blackbeard and we are working up to writing a non-chorological report about him. Did you know that he used gunpowder in his beard?
Last week, we had a message from a ship manufacturer, asking for our help to sell his prize ship to pirates. We had to make an advert to persuade pirates to buy it. We used persuasive language, alliteration and adjectives to describe the boats. Here are some examples:
We had lots of fun on Pirate day. We made pirate treasure maps, wrote a poem about Blackbeard, learnt some sea shanties and wrote some of our own. We even walked the plank!
Last week children and staff ‘Dressed up for Digits’ and took part in a day full of Maths, in order to raise money for the NSPCC.
Some of the costumes were truly amazing.
Here are some comments written by our Maths ambassador from Year 5:
“Hello my name is Joshua and I am going to tell you what I did on Friday [maths day]. First, me and my best friend Nathaniel started in reception and took some interesting pictures of them and some of their wacky clothes. They were epic! Some were wearing Number blocks outfits or some geometric patterns. We even took some pictures of the teachers.
After, we went to Year one and it just keeps getting better, for example, some of the children were dressed up as a calculator [I dressed up as a calculator] or a massive dice with six dots on it.
We went to our, own class [Turquoise] and it was very exciting because we took a picture of our friend [Nathan] preforming a calculation on the board. He ended up getting five team points”.
The conclusion is that maths day rocks!

Dog Owners Reminder: We understand that the school run is a good opportunity to walk your dog and encourages you to walk to school rather than drive. However, some members of our school community find walking past the number of dogs around both gates unnerving. We all have fears and for some, theirs is a fear of dogs. Please can we ask dog owners to continue to be mindful of this during the busy drop-off time and that you ensure you keep back from the school gates, that your dog is beside you and you do not allow them to jump up at children or families. May we also remind you that dogs are not permissible on the school premises at any time. Thank you in advance for your understanding and consideration in this matter.
Scholastic Book Fair: The Book Fair will be in school from Wednesday 21st February until Tuesday 27th February and will be open from 3:15 -3:45 each day for you to come into school to delve into some new books. All the classes will have the chance to visit themselves during the day and will hopefully find their new 'favourite book'. Reading is such a magical journey…Please come and support us. Not only will you and your children be able to enjoy a new book at home, but the more books we sell, the more books we will earn for children at Tunbury.
Book week: Our book week will be taking place during the week commencing Monday 4th March. Our theme this year is Twisted Tales and every year group will be reading a new alternative traditional story; building up to writing their own twisted tale at the end of the week. We have a range of in-school activities during this week to celebrate our love of reading such as a Masked Reader assembly, a book cover design competition, book character dress-up day on World Book Day itself as well as the eagerly anticipated sequel to the staff panto…..! Thank you for getting involved.
Tunbury Book Week
Wednesday 6th March
Design a book cover competition
During Book Week this year, we are running a design a book cover competition. We would like entries on A4 or smaller in any medium. This should not be a copy of a book cover, but an original design of either:
· what the child would have put on the cover of a published book if they had designed it, including title and author; or
· a book cover design that would make them pick up a book - but the book itself has not been published. For example, the child likes stars and cars so thinks of a potential storyline and draws a book cover in this theme. This design should include a made-up title (e.g. Pat's star car) and author (potentially themselves).
Thursday 7th March
World Book Day dressing up
Dress up as your favourite book character. In school, we’ll have a parade of costumes to show them off! There will be prizes for the best home-made costumes in each year group.
