Headteacher’s message to parents/carers

Dear Parents/Carers,

This week, we have opened our annual parent/carer survey.  As a community school, we are proud to gather, consider and act on the views of stakeholders from across our school community.  This includes a whole range of different views from children, parents/carers, members of staff and the wider local community, gathered both informally (in conversations or meetings) and formally (via annual surveys).  Whether these views are contrasting or with more of a consensus of opinion, we do our very best to include them in future decision making.

So, parents/carers, please help us to celebrate Team Tunbury’s achievements this academic year.  Is there someone or something that has made a big difference to your child, this year?  Are there special events which you would like to see us repeat?  Your responses help us to review the successes and stand-out moments from this year, as well as identifying priorities for next year.

This year, we have made it even quicker for you to complete the survey – it should only take about 6 minutes of your time.  We do want to hear from as many people as possible, so we’re conducting the survey earlier than usual and trying to boost the number of responses we get - watch out for reminders over the next week or so.

You can access the survey via www.surveymonkey.com/r/TPS2025 .  The survey is for all Tunbury parents/carers.  It is anonymous, but if you wish you can add your name or request a call-back from us.  Thank you for your ongoing support.

Have a lovely weekend everyone.

Best wishes

Ruth Austin

80th anniversary of VE day

Yesterday, 8th May 2025, we marked the historic 80th anniversary of VE day, which was on 8th May 1945.

In assembly, we spent time learning about VE Day.  We listened to Churchill’s address and learnt about the celebrations around the world that took place on 8th May 1945.  We reflected on the sacrifices made by people in World War II to defend our fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance.

Mr Taylor shared the personal story of his Grandpa, who was in Germany in 1945 with the RAF, by looking at a photo from the time, the postcard he sent home and a card he sent his wife expressing his hope to return home soon.

Year 6 children also remembered their own VE day street party which they held a few weeks ago on the school playground to recreate this experience from the time.

Our Learning: Year 5

Earlier this week, a mysterious package arrived containing Ancient Egyptian artefacts. This has fuelled our discussion in English- should foreign artefacts in British Museums be repatriated back to their country of origins? We have looked at the features of a persuasive letter and children have begun planning our letters about the issue. Some of these letters will be sent to the CEO of the British Museum; we are hoping that we will get a response!

In PSHE, we’ve been exploring ways to improve our physical and mental well-being. This week, we looked at sun safety where the children were challenged to create an eye-catching poster along with a catchy slogan promoting how to be safe in the sun.

In Science, we have been continuing our work on forces and have been looking at gravity and explaining why objects fall straight down. Two objects of identical size and shape are dropped from the same height, one of the objects is heavier that the other. Which object will hit the ground first? The children were surprised when they witnessed them both hitting the ground at the same time. This scientific understanding followed the works or Aristotle, Galileo and Sir Isaac Newton.

There is a great video by Professor Brian Cox where he drops a bowling ball and an ostrich feather, which illustrates this beautifully. This would be well worth a watch at home!

Tunbury’s Got Talent: Do you have a talent?! Tunbury's Got Talent is back by popular demand and we would love to hear from you if you would like to take part. Can you sing, dance, do gymnastics, tell jokes, play an instrument or anything else you would like to share? Please get in touch to register your interest, email to chair@thetunburyschoolassociation.com

Singing/Keyboard lessons: As part of the development of music provision at Tunbury, The Math Music Academy provides both individual singing and keyboard lessons.  The Department of Education has recognised that by participating in musical learning the development of speed of reaction and attention span improves academic performance.  Studying music improves a child’s learning, confidence, concentration and social skills. Studying either singing or keyboard enhances neurological pathways helping with improved educational performance and studies have proven that within primary school students were almost one year ahead of their non-musically trained peers in their Maths, Science and English performance.

The Math Music Academy will be holding free 15 minute trial sessions week of the 16th June for interested pupils wishing to commence lessons in September. During these trial lessons for singing the teacher will do basic exercises, note recognition and some repertoire and for piano the introduction to the keyboard and basic fingering.  Students have the opportunity to work towards school performances and concerts as well as graded examinations with both ABRSM and Trinity boards.

Please do contact our music teacher Sophie Hyde sophiehyde@aol.com to organise your free 15 minute trial or if you require any further information

Online Safety: We’re sharing Online Safety information, using resources from the National College’s #WakeUpWednesday program.  This week’s guide is about fostering a sense of belonging. Please see Parents>Letters and forms section of our website.
