Weekly Bulletin: Thursday 21st October 2021
Headteacher’s message to parents/carers
Thank you to everyone who visited us this week for our Open Afternoons - we had an amazing turnout of parents and carers. Children were so proud to share their work and I know that many parents found it helpful to see inside our classrooms, meet our staff and gain a better understanding of children’s daily experiences. Hopefully this means that when your child tells you about their day at school, you can picture it too! For some of our visitors, for example our parents of Reception and Year 1 children, this will be the very first time you have ever been able to come inside our school, after many months of ‘online only’ events. For parents of older children, it’s been a while, but it’s lovely to have you back!
It’s been a successful first term for children, as well as staff. Tomorrow is an INSET day, so we wish all of our families a happy and safe half term holiday. We look forward to seeing everyone back in school on Monday 1st November.
Our Learning: Year 5
This term, Year 5 have been reading How to Train your Dragon, which is a text they have thoroughly enjoyed reading. They have written a diary entry from Hiccup’s point of view, as well as creating their own map and non-chronological reports to describe the Isle of Berk. Their final written piece this term was to predict and write the resolution and ending to the story. The children did a fantastic job at planning their own creative ideas for the ending of the story.
We also created a picture of a dragon’s eye during our art lessons:
To end our Viking topic this term, the children took part in a Viking day. We looked at the Viking Runes they used to communicate with each other and had a go at writing our own messages for others to try and decode. We also designed and made a traditional Viking tunic, typical of what Vikings would have worn daily. We measured out our material and used Running and Back stitches to sew each of the parts of the tunic together. Some of us were able to work with our parents when they visited us on Monday.
As part of Black History Month, we learnt all about Katherine Johnson, who was an American mathematician. She made important contributions to the United States space program during her career at NASA. Her work helped send astronauts to the Moon.
We wrote letters to Katherine to thank her for her work and for persevering when she was faced with many challenges due to certain unfair rules in place at the time. We presented these during a whole school assembly on Monday morning.
Black History Month Learning: Year 1
For Black History Month Year 1 learnt about Rosa Parks. The children found it very interesting learning about how things were for Rosa growing up and we have had some excellent discussions about equality. As part of our learning we have done drama and also drawn pictures of Rosa to go alongside our writing. We really enjoyed teaching the School Councillors and the rest of KS1 about Rosa Parks in assembly.
Message from Miss Byrne, SENCo:
I have several 20 minute Senco slots available on parents evening for any parents that would like to see me on Tuesday 2nd of November between 3.30 and 6.30pm (in person in school) and on Thursday 4th November 3.30 -6.30pm on line via TEAMS. Please book via the online booking system.
Best wishes, Miss Byrne
Team Points: Congratulations Attenborough! After a dramatic finish, you overtook Rowling in the final week to regain your lead and win this term’s team point race. Children in Attenborough team had extra playtime this morning as their prize.
P.E.: As you’ll already know, we have transferred responsibility for teaching PE lessons from our Sports Coaches to our class teachers. Each class will continue to have two separate sessions timetabled through the week, but these may be different to the two days they were timetabled this term. This is to ensure our Sports Coaches, Mr Kent and Miss Humphreyes, are able to support each year group with the teaching of different sports throughout the year.
Each class in a year group will not always have PE on the same day, so please ensure that your child’s PE kit is in school for the whole week. For this reason, we cannot give you a list of days that each year group has PE, so your child’s class teacher will let your child know the two specific days that they have been timetabled.
Also, please be aware that if your child’s class has Forest School or swimming lessons, they will only be doing one ‘regular’ PE lesson per week.
Please be reminded that earrings are to be removed for all PE lessons. Tape is not permitted as of term 2. It is your child’s responsibility to remove their earrings – this cannot be done by an adult in school.
Library: Over the last couple of days, with the support of some wonderful volunteers, we have begun to organise the wealth of books in our school library. Next term we will be supported by Easy Library to catalogue our library so that the children will be able to browse and borrow the books with ease. Would you be able to help with this exciting process? We are looking for volunteers who would be available on Monday 8th or Tuesday 9th November to support scanning books into our new system. If you would be able to support, please contact the school office.
Extra-curricular clubs starting in Term 2: Bookings for our extra-curricular after-school clubs are now open. Please book onto a club using the details in the letter which was shared on Tuesday.
Parents’ evenings: Parents’ evenings are straight after half term, on Tuesday and Thursday on the first week back. Bookings are now open. Please book a meeting using the details in the letter which was shared last week.
School Lunches: The new menu, starting next term, has been published on our website, with information for vegetarians. You’ll find this at www.tunbury.kent.sch.uk/Parents/School-Meals/ If you have any child with food allergies and would like to go through the menu with Mrs Esposito, school cook and Mrs Russell, Total Catering Solutions, please contact TCS on 07899983554.
Remembrance Day: This falls on Sunday 14th November 2021. It is a national opportunity to remember the service and sacrifice of all those that have defended our freedoms and protected our way of life. To mark Remembrance Day we will be selling poppies during the first week back after the holiday.
Odd Socks Day: This will take place on Monday 15th November. Odd Socks Day is designed to be fun! It's an opportunity to encourage people to express themselves and celebrate their individuality and what makes us all unique! ... Odd Socks day takes place on the first day of Anti-Bullying Week each year to help raise awareness of bullying.
Prospectus: We have just published our school prospectus for 2021-22, with updated information and some lovely new photographs of Tunbury children in school. You can view the new prospectus at www.tunbury.kent.sch.uk/docs/new_entrants/new_entrants_2022/Tunbury_prospectus_2021-2022.pdf
Flu Immunisation Programme Reminder: Please see the letter published on our website: www.tunbury.kent.sch.uk/Parents/Letters-Forms/
Please note the e-consent portal closes on 10/11/2021, 3 working days before our schools immunisation session, and NHS cannot accept late consents or consents on the day of vaccination.
If any parents/carers are having issues completing the online consent form, they can call the immunisation team CAT on 0300 123 5205 or the local Medway office on 01634 337 666 and they will be able to go through the consent form with you over the phone.
Covid-19: We are all aware that Covid cases are starting to rise, locally and nationally. From previous experience, we know that any rise in cases outside the school gates does also affect us inside school. Please stay alert to possible Covid symptoms, get a test promptly if you or your child experience symptoms and follow all NHS guidance. School staff are taking twice weekly Covid tests and we would encourage other adults and secondary school pupils in our community to do the same.
As before, if you or your children are experiencing Covid symptoms, do not approach or enter the school site. Continue to follow the current Covid guidance – you can check this at www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/
INSET day reminder: Please remember tomorrow, Friday 22nd October is an INSET day, so no children will attend school on this day.
