Weekly Bulletin:Tuesday 1st September 2020

Headteacher’s message

Dear Parents/Carers,

We hope that you all have had an enjoyable, restful and safe summer break.

Everyone at Tunbury is looking forward to welcoming your children back into school for the first day of term tomorrow.

Our plans for the return to school were already shared with you in July and this information has not been changed. As a reminder, we thought the following points would be helpful before tomorrow:

  • Please check the times and gates for your children (in the Notices section below) so that you know when and where to come in the morning.
  • Please don’t arrive early – we want to avoid large groups of people waiting or gathering at any of our three gates. Please arrive within your ten-minute time slot for entry, not before or afterwards.
  • Please read the guidance on siblings and family groups, so that you know which gate your children will enter. With the exception of siblings of Year R children, siblings can be dropped off and collected at the designated gate and time for the youngest sibling in the family group. Year R children are not included in this arrangement and need to be dropped off and collected separately, without any school-aged siblings. Staff will be on hand tomorrow morning and at the start and end of every day to help you and your children. Some examples:
  • If you have children in Year 1, 3 and 4, all three children can enter at the front gate at the time for Year 1 (8.35-8.45). The children in Year 3 and 4 will separate from you in front of the main school office and walk to their classrooms via designated routes, before you walk down to the drop-off point for Year 1.
  • If you have children in Year R and Year 2, you need to enter for your Year 2 at the front gate at the time for Year 2 (8.45-8.55). Following this, you need to walk around to the back of the school with your Year R child to walk them to their classroom (during the transition period) via the playground gate.
  • If you have children in Year 3 and 5, both children can enter at the playground gate at the time for Year 3 (8.35-8.45). Both children will say goodbye to you at the playground gate before walking to their classrooms via the designated routes.

We understand that these routines will take some getting used to, so bear with us while children, staff and other parents/carers get used to the new arrangements. If we need to make any tweaks to these systems after the first couple of days, we will let you know.

For the full information on the return to school, please re-read www.tunbury.kent.sch.uk/News/Weekly-Bulletin-Friday-17th-July-2020/ Following this, if you still have queries or concerns about the new term, office staff are available to help you today via phone or email.

We very much look forward to working in partnership with you and your children through the coming school year.

Best wishes

Ruth Austin

Notices

The information in red has been updated since July.

PE

Starting next week, PE lessons will resume as normal, but children will come into school on their PE day already dressed in their PE kit. The PE day for each year group is as follows:

Monday: Year 5 (from Monday 7th September)

Tuesday: Year R and Year 3 (from Tuesday 8th September)

Wednesday: Year 2 and Year 6 (from Wednesday 9th September)

Thursday: Year 1 and Year 4 (from Thursday 10th September)

As children are wearing their PE kits all day on their PE day, there is no need to send children into school with a PE bag or kit – these will now remain at home.

What should children bring to school?

Children can bring school bags, packed lunches and water bottles. Everyone should wear full school uniform. Children do not need to being PE kits. Older children can bring their own pencil cases, but they must be small enough to fit into their trays – they can’t be stored on their desks because this makes effective cleaning more difficult. If you have any school reading books at home from prior to lockdown, please send these back into school now.

Allergens

Please can we remind all parents and carers that Tunbury is a nut-free school. This means that you cannot give children any products containing nuts (eg Nutella) in their packed lunches. This rule isn’t new – it has always been the case, but we do need everyone to understand that the consequences of sending nut products into school can be potentially life-threatening for children with severe allergies. Thank you for your support and understanding.

What about masks?

This has been in the news recently, but the new guidelines are only applicable to secondary aged children. Our approach at Tunbury is that if staff or children would like to wear face coverings at the school gate or in any communal areas of the school, then this is allowed. However, please bear in mind that because of the hierarchy of control measures in place in our risk assessment, including the separation of class and year group bubbles, the wearing of masks at school is not considered necessary. In accordance with government guidelines, masks should not be worn within a classroom setting due to the other control measures in place here.

Separate arrangements have been made for entry and exit for our new Reception children and are these are now available at www.tunbury.kent.sch.uk/New-Entrants-2020

General guidelines on entry and exit are as follows:

  • Please do not be early or late, but arrive at the designated time – this is essential to avoid gathering of parents and families at the gates.
  • For the same reason, please leave the school proximity quickly after dropping off or collecting children.
  • Also, please limit the number of people coming to school to 1 adult per family group.
  • In the morning, teachers will be in their classrooms and children will ‘free flow’ directly into the classrooms without gathering or lining up. Senior leaders will be at the gate and children will be supervised by teaching assistants as they go into class.
  • In the afternoon, teachers will walk their class as a line towards the designated gate and dismiss children from there. All three classes from each year group will be dismissing simultaneously within the 10 minute period.
  • For children in Year 1 and 2 entering via the front gate, in the mornings parents will walk down to the lower car park and say goodbye to their children there (in the same way as Year 1 children entered school in June/July). In the afternoon, it will be different – parents will wait outside the front gate and teachers will walk children up towards this gate and dismiss from this area.
  • With the exception of siblings of Year R children, siblings can be dropped off and collected at the designated gate and time for the youngest sibling in the family group. Year R children are not included in this arrangement and need to be dropped off and collected separately, without any school-aged siblings.
